So, our sports editor at the newspaper quit... he only gave 1 month's notice, and we didn't get anyone hired, so they come to me on Tuesday (the day before he left) and say, "Hey, you can take pictures and BS your way through sports, right?"

Now... I could write a football story. But I don't know dick about baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, or tennis. This could be interesting.

Anyway, I take it, and now I really should be asking for a raise. Right now, I literally have three desks in three different departments. I have three described jobs, and two other non-described jobs.

No, we're just REALLY shorthanded right now. Our People/Events editor is pregnant, due in about 2 weeks, the news editor is in the hospital with a gangrenous(sic?) gall bladder, the sports editor just quit, and I have the experience from photographing sports for the past five years.

It's not easy. I really enjoy it, so that makes it easier, but reviewing is not easy. Here's a post from May where someone called movie reviewers lazy-do nothings... keep in mind I was pissed off, so that's the tone....

Of course, I may be biased -- I am one of those "people out there with jobs reviewing movies." But I take offense at that "lazy-donothing" comment. Do you know how difficult it is to write a review in 30 minutes less than an hour after you've seen it? I can guarantee it's more difficult than you think.

I also know for a fact "lazy" is not a word to associate with a film critic... besides requiring yourself to NOT turn your brain off during movies like "XXX" and "Sahara," we have to stay focused, critically analyzing the film when everybody else gets to check their brains at the door and hang on for the ride. Believe me, it's not an easy job. Now, again, perhaps I'm a little biased about the lazy comment since I for one hold three jobs and work a minimum of 70 hours a week. Do you do that? I work full-time as a critic and a graphic artist EDIT: And now a sports editor... YAY!), and part time as a musical director for a church... besides that time, which is all during the day, I work OVERNIGHT on weekends at a television station.

As far as your "regular folks" review... well, I can't really argue with you. Most critics seem to be self-indulgent and movie snobs. While I can't argue that I'm not a movie snob, I am without a doubt one of the most forgiving critics writing today, simply because I review a film based on what I believe its goal to be. For instance, "Sahara" was supposed to be a summer-type Indian Jones wannabe, check your brain at the door and watch shit explode film... mindless entertainment. Did it succeed in my mind? Yes -- it was entertaining. Was it a good film? No.

I'm a little surprised they didn't promote one of your sportswriters. Are they all putzes?

We're a daily paper, but we only cover the county... the editor was the writer.

That seems like an awful lot for one guy to handle.

OK id never call you lazy. Its definately NOT easy to sit through crap like Triple XXX State of the Union and The Pacifer without walking out.

Yes... yes it is. The work week started yesterday, and I've already put in 8 hours of overtime. By the end of the weekend, I'll be sitting at 30 hours for the week, with three days to go.

If you were smart.....you'd consider "subcontracting" to some of your planet bretheren.

I'll work up a column, but its going to cost you, since it will be such a rousing success.
