Chiefs: Tynes good but not great

News
Kicker Lawrence Tynes is kicking well enough to prevent the Chiefs from bringing in competition, but just barely. "He's missed one every time we've had a field goal session, which is disappointing," head coach Dick Vermeil told the Kansas City Star. "But I still have confidence in him…Obviously, that's why we don't have any other kickers here. If he proves me wrong, then we'll have to do something to broaden competition."

Talk about a ringing endorsement. Thanks to the Chiefs' juggernaut offense, Tynes tied Mike Vanderjagt for the most point-after attempts in the league. However, he also missed two of them and converted only 17 of his 23 field goals. Candidly, we wouldn't mind seeing the Chiefs audition someone with a more reliable boot.

Tynes needs to go, he chokes under pressure-and was not that great at kicking off last year. Halfcan

don't most kickers pretty much suck at first?

i like the kid and i think he'll be a productive kicker for us for a long time to come...

remember, with this offense, you don't need to be nick lowery...

Yeah but it would be nice if he could get it past the 20 on kickoffs more than once every few games. I never said I didn't like him-he has a great story, but I wish we had a veteran instead., Halfcan

I seem to remember kickoffs being better this past year than they have been the last 3 or 4. Granted, there's a lot of room for improvement, but I thought he did *better.

Umm, did you just start watching the chiefs??? Tynes has been superior to anybody on our team(kickers) in the last three years, especially in kickoffs... There is zero kickers out there that can come in and kickoff better then him... Do you really want us wasting another space to carry a kickoff specialist and a old kicker (morton) that could barely make 35 yards???

There is no one there that could come in and easily supplant him.. I mean with that logic we should bring in a legit #1 reciever like TO or C. Johnson..

Tynes was 11th in the league in touchbacks with 7. Not too bad for a rookie. He was far from perfect, but he was a rookie, he really wasn't much better or worse than Nate Kaeding, who was an extremely hyped rookie kicker. I expect Kaeding will get better, same thing with Tynes... good kickers have to be a rookie sometime, we got that out of the way with Tynes last year.

Vallium good point-Morton was sad on kickoffs but he didn't miss extra points either. There is your next thread TO to KC!! I wouldn't want that arrogant co#ksucker. Then it would be all about TO, the rest of the team would have to bow down to him or he would pout or come up with a mysterious groin injury like he is now. He has talent but what a D%ck!! I hope you are right about Tiny Tynes-but he has looked like crap in camp-my friends were up there a week and said his kickoffs were very shaky. Plus missing half of field goals pst the 35. Why can't we draft a date rape/bar fighting/club foot like the raiders have? Halfcan

And the reason Tynes couldn't kickoff well for some games is because he wasn't allowed to. Our kickoff coverage last year was so God-awful the coaches told him to kick it high and short with good hangtime so our guys could make something happen. They needed the extra help.

Please, what coach said to put it at the 25 or 30 instead of out of the endzone? Hey isn't the Other Morton still out there Gary-he is a funny little guy. I hope the Tynes gamble pays off.

How do you figure he is a gamble? If the chiefs are relying on field goals to win games then there are other things to worry about.

Just a gut feeling from watching the Chiefs lose on a 10 degree December day in the playoffs-back when we had the best D in the NFL and some jackass couldn't make a few field goals. He might work out but I have no faith in him and if he cost us even one game-especially a close playoff game than it is a gamble. At least we got a Punter-Murphy was not horrible he could have been given the same free pass as Tynes. My point is where is the competition for the spot-we brought noone and so far his performance has not warranted being handed the job. A bad kicker can kill you-ask the stupid Jets fan floating around here today. Halfcan

What about Gramatica at least he dances good, isn't he available-just joking hate that fag. But in the whole world we couldn't find some competition. Remember old punter Louie Agular didn't he come off the streets? What about the NFLE or the CFL, somewhere? Maybe your right-it is slim pickins. Okay what if he sucks in preseason then what? Bring a guy in right before the season. I think it is a gamble-great guy, I really like his attitude, but just to hand it too him-not sure about that. Halfcan

Dude, he is a good kicker. He missed only one more extra point than Vanderjagt last season. And only 1 more FG attempt (2 of those attempts over 50 yards).

Yeah he is, I hope Tynes developes that kind of accuracy starting this year-we need him to have a big year. Good points pen!

We really should have at least one veterinarian kicker in camp to push Tynes.

Tynes is fine. Replacing him with some flavor-of-the-nanosecond suckass would be most counter-productive.

part of Tynes problem on kickoff were because of our sucky coverage imo.

he could kick it deeper ... but when he did our coverage couldn't get down there in time.

so they (apparently) told him to sacrifice distance for hang time to help the coverage guys out.

vermeil and tynes both talk about the hang time vrs distance issue.

our coverage teams have been poor for awhile now.

that has as much to do with our "kicking problems" as the kickers do

our punters and kickoff guys have been taking the blame the entire time for stuff that wasn't all their fault.

just my imo
