Yes ENDelt - I'm convinced that it's all my fault.

Yesterday I backed into another contractor's truck at a jobsite. Barely tapped the thing. No damage to mine. $1600 to his.

Today my truck dies at a stoplight and a really pungent odor creeps into the cab. I start it and head to the nearest parking lot....

Open the hood to flames.

Slam hood.

Sprint 1/4 mile to Ace hardware.

Sling open door. "Fire extinguishers."

"Back of the store, sir."

"You're kidding, right?"

Get extinguisher, race out to truck. Pop hood again. Flames haven't spread much yet. Hit flames with powder.

Assess damage. Seems to be confined to the alternator and wiring harness.

Disconnect alternator, fire up the truck, drive home.

Took 'bout an hour to install new alternator and harness tonight. All is well. At least it didn't cost me too much this time. $200 is all.

Still haven't heard back from the bastards who supposedly insured my Yukon in Mexico. They're either waiting until 90 days to respond or they're ignoring me for some other reason. Bastards.

Right. With my luck, I'd match all the numbers and fall into a well on my way to cash that bitch in. As they pull me out 6 days later, barely clinging to life, the ticket drops back into the well as they load me into the ambulance. With that chapter of my life closed, my luck changes for the better..... this time when I back into somebody it only costs me $1200.

Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if you were to buy me a ticket. I mean your luck is bad enough right now that it would be just your luck that if you gave it to someone else it might win, but on the other hand, my luck is so bad that there is no way I could win.

Somehow I think I would end up winning a free one and have to pick the numbers myself only to lose.

Yep. That's the arrest I got while Phil was in town. I made the fool move of driving into Tempe during Memorial Day weekend. Didn't even think about it being a holiday weekend.

Cop claims I veered into the bike lane for six seconds (seriously). Pulls me over. I refused field sobriety tests. Arrests me. I refuse breathalyzer. Gets search warrant, takes blood.

My blood came back at .059. Now, since the legal limit is .08, one might think I was off scott free. But, in AZ you don't have to have over the legal limit to get a DUI. They have a whole separate charge for BAC over .08.

Since I had a prior back in February of 01, and I refused the breathalyzer, the prosecutor wanted me to pay for *something*.... so, he dropped the DUI, dropped the BAC over .08, dropped the no proof of insurance (I had valid insurance... just had an expired card on me that night), and stuck me with failure to stay in one lane w/ the max fine.

$2500 to the lawyer, almost $500 for the remaining civil offense... and I'm out about $3,000 for the ordeal... on my way *to* the bar. Had every intention of leaving the car there overnight.

Course, since I refused the breathalyzer I'm supposed to lose my license for a year. That hearing is yet to come. If they take my license away, when I get it back I have to get state-mandated f*ck-you-in-the-ass insurance (aka, SR-22) for, I believe, a year. So, I'm not nearly out of the woods yet. But, I've avoided my second offense DUI, minimum thirty days in jail, and having a ingnition interlock device installed in my vehicle.

I've had my car towed for leaving it a bar overnight before. And the shady f*cking tow company tried to assf*ck me out of money, too.

AZ has pretty stiff DUI laws. You get jail time for a first offense. 1 day for a normal, 10 for an extreme (over .15). Second offense is 30 day min. Third offense in five years is a felony... you go spend a few months in the state pen w/ the murderers and rapists and shit.

You can also have a felony DUI if you get a DUI while driving on a suspended license or w/ someone under 15 in the car.

Did you know that a Toyota Rav 4's Alternator costs more than an alternator for a Jaguar XK8? Yep.

I found this out last winter on new years eve when my brother in law who was moving from VA back to St Louis decided to quit his job and move and, btw, file for bankruptcy...and his car broke down just before he headed out half way across the country.

A new one from the dealer costs $620...dealer cost is about $520...yeah, five HUNDRED dollars. So I decide that Im going to have to do this myself and go to the local auto parts store and get a 'refurb' for the low low price of $300. As the dude is looking it up and giving me the part, he says, 'Could be worse, you could be changing the alternator or a Jaguar XK8'...and proceeds to look it up...Jaguar's alternator was only $200.

Have you considered trading in that large truck for a small two-seat roadster? It would hold fewer tools and lumber, but you're much less likely to hit other vehicles.

Your alternator is a battery charger. If you want to jack up somebody's week, disconnect their alternator. Their car will run for a while and then won't start.

Bastards.

Heh, that happened to me one time going up the interstate. My first clue to a problem was a light on the dash followed by immediate flames licking their way our from under the hood by the fender. I was right by an exit so I pulled off and into the parking lot of the gas station right on the corner.

Mountain Dew worked for me. Course I had to douse it a couple of times before the fire would stay subdued....that alternator was glowing bright red when I first opened it.

Are you serious? And I thought it sucked bad when my alternator for my van cost me almost $200. Well at least I can say mine cost as much as a Jaguar. :shake:

Can you imagine trying to get up and down out of a cup?I don't know if you are old enough or into country music to remember a show called, "Hee Haw". They always had a part in the show where they sang, "Doom despair, and agony on me. Deep dark depression excessive misery, if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all, Doom despair and agony on me."

You would make a great guest host on that bit part right about now, inbetween Junior Samples, Buck Owens, and Grandpa.

you know phil, I almost forgot that I had a similar experience when my wiring harness chafed against my battery, and both caught fire. The car cut out on an onramp in the earhart expressway fifty feet from the ground, I saw the smoke and sparks. from under the hood, opened it up saw what was happening, and decided I wanted to save the motor my dad had just spent three weeks rebuilding, got my half inch wrench out the back and a piece of cardboard to shield myself from the sputtering smoking mess. I then disconnected the battery, It was leaking by this time, and on fire. I broke it out of the tray grabbed it by the handle, and as I was throwing it over the guardrail a cop who had stopped to see what was going on was walking up to the car. when she hit the ground it exploded, it sounded like a gun. The conversation went something like this -

Cop: what the hell did you do that for?
Me: well isn't it obvious, it was on fire and going to explode inside my engine compartment. if that happened, the whole car could have went.
Cop: you need to go pick it up.
Me: sure if you can tell me how to get down there, and if you have a fire truck come and hose it for me.
Cop: nevermind, I see what you mean.
Me: can you give me a lift to a phone?
Cop: no, but I'll call you a towtruck.
Me: thanks a lot.
It was the middle of summer and like 100 degrees outside. Towtruck never came, but a friend of mine just happened to drive by and see me, and stopped and gave me a lift. I ended up fixing it right there on the shoulder the next day to get it home, but it took me replacing the whole harness to get the lights working again.

My luck is finally changing for the positive. I just wanted to update you guys on this situation. I got my claim settled today. It turns out that the conversion package on my Yukon saved my ass. I'm not going to take a bath afterall. It only took 6 months, but I'm gonna get a little bit of money back in my pocket. At least enough to cover the payments I've been making on a stolen truck for the past 6 months.
