GRETZ: The Fight Begins Tonight
Aug 12, 2005, 6:07:15 AM by Bob Gretz - FAQ
RIVER FALLS, WI – By the time Friday turns into Saturday here in the northwoods, there will be more than a few players holed up in their McMillan Hall dorm rooms, wondering about how much longer their football careers may last.
The Chiefs open the pre-season schedule tonight against the Vikings in the Metrodome. There are 91 names on the roster. Of that group, approximately 40 players really have no worries about making the team. So, 51 players are fighting for 13 spots on the active roster and another eight slots that will be available on the practice squad. There’s no mandatory cutdown in the NFL until Tuesday, August 30th, when the roster must be at 65 players, plus NFL Europe exemptions.
By the time tonight’s game is over and the Chiefs bus has made the return jaunt to UW-River Falls, some of those 51 players will have cut themselves based on their performance. Another group will have elevated themselves and their chances of making the team. The largest group will continue to wonder about how much longer their time in pro football will last.
There are battles at every position with the exception of quarterback and tight end. The three players at those spots are established. The biggest roster battles will come at four positions: linebacker, cornerback, wide receiver and running back.
LINEBACKER: Generally there are seven, sometimes eight players kept at linebacker. Right now there seem to be four players assured of making the roster: Derrick Johnson, Kendrell Bell, Kawika Mitchell and Keyaron Fox. With his ability in the kicking game, Gary Stills appears a good shot to remain on the roster. That leaves two spots open, and one of those needs to go to a middle linebacker type; either Rich Scanlon or Boomer Grigsby. At outside linebacker, undrafted rookie Kris Griffin is battling with veterans Scott Fujita and Quinton Caver for what appears to be the final spot.
CORNERBACK: There are eight listed on the roster, with room for five. Remember that before the final roster is set, Eric Warfield will begin his four-game suspension. Patrick Surtain and Dexter McCleon have been the starters, with Benny Sapp working as the nickel back. That leaves grizzled veteran additions Ashley Ambrose and Dewayne Washington and rookies Alphonso Hodge and Justin Perkins. These pre-season games will go a long way in deciding the mix there for those final two spots. Will they go one veteran, one rookie? Will they start with two veterans, then slice one when Warfield’s suspension is over?
WIDE RECEIVER: Let’s start with Eddie Kennison, Samie Parker and Dante Hall; they are on the roster, taking up three of the five spots at this position. Marc Boerigter is not only a veteran, but a top-notch special teams performer, so it’s hard to imagine he won’t be on the final 53-man list. That leaves one spot and fighting for that are veterans Darrell Hill, Chris Horn, Freddie Mitchell, John Booth and Richard Smith, along with rookies Craphonso Thorpe and Nathaniel Curry.
Chances for Mitchell and Curry have been hurt by injuries that have kept them off the practice field. Special teams will play the biggest part of this decision, which gives Hill and Horn and edge.
RUNNING BACK: Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson and Tony Richardson are locks. After that, the field is wide open for one halfback and one fullback. Dee Brown, Ronnie Cruz, McKenzi Smith and Sam Gado are at halfback, with veteran Robert Holcombe remaining at fullback.
Brown has been the most impressive player among this group, plus he’s an experienced contributor to the kicking game.

Gary Stills has been a special teams ace for how many years, yet how many years has our kickoff coverage sucked ass?
I'm ready for a new face. I want to see Scanimal and a crazy white boy on the special teams field instead of Stills who can't contribute at LB when called upon.

I agree,Stills is probally going to push one these 2 kids ( Rich / Boomer )to the waivers only to be picked up my some other team. Chances of either of them making our PS is slim.

I just don't see it ..............Warrick would be so much farther behind on the scheme and route running.

They usually keep 7 LBs, but this year they'll keep 8 LBs:
- Bell
- Johnson
- Mitchell
- Fox
- Fujita
- Grigsby
- Scanlon
- Stills
Why keep 8 LBs? Because Stills is a ST ace and he can also backup at DE.

I wasn't aware we had a question at RB other than how many carries with Larry get. The RB position isn't that compelling. It'll be:
- Holmes
- Johnson
- Richardson
- Holcombe
- Brown
There's a small chance they may go with just 4 RBs, which would cut Brown and allow for a 6th WR. That's it. There's really no mystery.
A Depth chart I was just considering at this point according to the sources posted on the planet.
3 QB: Green, Collins, Huard
2 RB:Holmes, Johnson, Holcombe
2 FB:TRich, Holcombe
5 WR:Kennison, Parker, Hall, Bo, Thorpe
3 TE: TonyG, Wilson, Dunn
2 OT:Roaf, Black
1 RG:Waters
2 C:Welbourne,Bober
1 LG:Shields, Welbourne
2 LT:Sampson, Welbourne
4 DE: Hicks, Allen, Wilkerson, Hall
4 DT: Sims, Browning, Dalton, Siavii
7 LB: DJ,Bell,Mitchell,Fox,Stills,Grigsby,Scanlon
5 CB: Surtain, McCleon, Sapp, Warfield, Hodge
2 FS: Wesley, Bartee
1 SS: Knight, Wesley
4 ST: Gammon, Tynes, Colquitt, Stills
total: 50
8 PS:Killian, Parquet, Dixon, Svitek, McIntyre, Horn, Griffin, Long
This leave room for one more player on the active roster. I know the Oline depth is sort of thin so maybe the Chiefs carry another Guard. I like what the team has done with versatile players like Bober and Holcombe to free up some potential spots each week.

If Peter Warrick gets cut, and KC can get him off waivers.I predict He'll be competing for the #1 or #2 spot in the WR corps
The WR position is more dicey. But here's how I see it:
1 - Kennison - lock
2 - Parker - lock
3 - Boerigter - almost a lock
4 - Hall - lock
5 - Thorpe - I can't see him surviving on the PS. I give hime 75% chance to be on the 53 man roster.
6 - Mitchell - FredEx is the wild card. He could be anywhere from 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th WR or cut all together. His injury has hurt his chances and moved him down the depth chart. He WAS looking like the #2 or #3 WR.
-- I think McIntyre and one other WR will be on the PS. The 2nd WR on the PS could be Smith, Curry or Booth.
-- Saunders says they don't want to wear out Hall at the WR position. He needs to focus on KR/PR and his WR duties will be extremely limited. Therefore, I think there's a chance for a 6th WR to be kept.

Actually looking at his list he only has 3. I think we keep Knight, Wesley, Bartee and Harts. Woods will get cut and so will Pile.

Hate to bash an honest effort, but this is weak man...
Sorry, in a rush I made a few mistakes. Purposely left out some players like Fujita and Barber because they haven't practiced.
So is this what it could look like if the season started tommorrow? Still need another Olineman I think, but I can't imagine who could make it. Williams comes to mind, but Ive only read that he's been on the loosing end of some drills.

When ENDelt eventually dies from cirrhosis, who would be the winner?
Certainly not the proprieters of local taverns.

With those two, you most likely get both tastes great and less filling.

That's what you call a "win win" situation.
