Heat sign first-round pick F Simien

August 12, 2005
MIAMI (Ticker) - The Miami Heat signed forward Wayne Simien, their first-round pick in the June draft, on Friday.

The signing comes after Simien averaged 17.1 points and 7.0 rebounds for the Heat's Summer Pro League entry in Long Beach, California last month.

Financial terms were not disclosed. All first-round rookie contracts are two years with separate club options for the third and fourth years. Under terms of the recently ratified collective bargaing agreement, Simien will receive $1.5 million in the first two years.

The Heat selected Simien with the 29th overall pick as insurance if starting power forward Udonis Haslem signed an offer sheet that Miami would be unable to match. However, the Heat were able to re-sign Haslem to a five-year contract.

The 6-9, 255-pound Simien has the size to compete at power forward in the NBA. Last season, he led the Big 12 Conference in both scoring and rebounding with 19.4 points and 11.1 boards despite missing four games due to surgery on his left thumb.

Named the Big 12 Player of the Year, Simien was the only player in the league to average a double-double in those categories.

In the Summer Pro League, Simien ranked second on the Heat in points (120), rebounds (49) and blocked shots (5). His four 20-point efforts tied Earl Barron for the team lead.

The Heat on Friday also signed guard Gerald Fitch, who averaged 13.4 points while competing for the Washington Wizards' entry in the Reebok Vegas Summer League.

Terms were not disclosed.

If that doesn't work out, we could use him at TE.
