The Western channel is running a Gunsmoke marathon this weekend. In the duel they show at the very beginning, Marshal Dillon gets outdrawn EVERYTIME. He's just lucky the other fellow's aim is not great. This bothered me when I watched Gunsmoke as a little kid, and it still bothers me. I'm marked for life. :deevee:

With the exception of Hill Street Blues, I can't think of a single TV drama aired before, say, the time of LA Law that I have any interest in. Sorry.

The duel isn't always the same? I never paid much attention to the opening duel, and I thought it didn't change from one episode to the next.

I like Gunsmoke, especially now that I'm older and understand more of what's going on. Even as a kid, though, it was fun to watch with the rest of the family.

I haven't seen an episode in years, but it's one of the absolute first shows I can remember watching as a child (the other being Captain Kangaroo).

However, it sounds like what you really need to watch is the scene from Unforgiven where Gene Hackman talks about the pros and cons of accuracy versus speed. :D

I was never a fan of Gunsmoke.
Bonanza was better.

Yeah, it's the same gunfight over and over. I keep waiting for Matt to lose but he never does. He can also whip anybody.

If they ever do change the gunfight, they ought to have Henrietta Hippo from The New Zoo Revue be the bad guy. I bet she wouldn't even get to draw before Marshall Dillon emptied his revolver. I'd like to see her dance, then.

I agree, but it still bothers me to hear the other guy's gun go off before Dillon's. Makes me think he only got lucky.

1. not old enough
2. black and white (tv must be broken)
3. all other channels wiped out by tvland (what else are you gonna watch?)

I know the answer to this, I bet.

It's the Code of the West. Marshall Dillon would never shoot another guy first. The only time he would shoot someone is if they shot at him first.

I always loved how the characters on the show would often be riding around through the mountainous desert surrounding Dodge City.

What are you doing injecting wisdom and logic in MY useless thread, Rain Man? Go start your OWN useless thread!..... Hey,.... Wait a minute.....

I've noticed that oversight too. But have been willing to live with it.

That is because in the history of man, only Rich Scanlon has more God like powers than Matt Dillion. :D
