Ok, I'm watching Bush speak and I'm thinking something looks really weird. I think I've solved the reason. I think his shirt is buttoned wrong.

Anybody else notice this? Agree/Disagree?

My wife thought so, too. But she thought it had to do with the statue in the background and that they had the camera too close. She said that he looked like he was looming or something.

Anyway...

Lest anyone say that I cannot praise W:
That was a damned good speech. He admitted fault, took responsibility, and said they'd fix the problem. Then he did the nice historical allusion to other natural disasters and said we'd overcome. Good speech.

Yeah, something made him look even weirder tonight. It reminded me of something out of Southpark. I was waiting to hear him say, MMMMkay...

Yea only problem is when you say they'd fix the problem, what you mean is we will pay for it. Talk about throwing money at a problem-this guy is the king. Where the hell is this money going to come from?

Hey hey hey! Don't ask me. I'm getting tax cuts, and what I haven't gotten cut, I've moved into offshore shelters. Life is good. Smoke 'em while you got 'em. Someone will be along to tell you that they're just bleeding the beast or something. Not to worry. It's all part of some kind of master plan.

That picture looks even weirder than what I saw on my TV. Maybe they're merging Bush's speech in with one of those scary new shoes coming out for the falll season. He's supposed to be possessed or infested with aliens or something? It's the new day in political fund raising. Merge advertising with political appearances. W. will be making cameos on Survivor and Cheney will be hanging out on American Idol.

I thought that the lighting made his shirt look the same color as the building behind him. A sort of soft blue. It did look like something out of South Park. Like his head was a pasted onto a flat two dimensional screen.

The visual wasn't the only thing that seemed odd, though. What I was hearing seemed to challenge my notion of reality, as well. The whole thing seemed bizarre for about the first ten minutes then I was able to get my bearings straight.

Yea poke fun at how Bush looked. All I noticed was the clock on the cathedrial was off.

But the best thing for those of us that visit NO frequently was seeing Jackson Square look almost untouched.

Agreed. My wife was designing wedding invitations today for a couple that are getting married in Jackson Square. That's what we kept saying. It's awesome to see, at least, that part of the city fairly preserved. The couple has postponed their wedding, but they're still going ahead with their original plan to get married there. I hate to be insensitive to all the poor families that lost their homes, but if I have to choose between the historical section of the city getting demolished and the slums getting demolished, I'm going to be thankful that the historical section is still standing.

I didn't see the speech (was at a memorial service) but have seen clips and from the looks of this picture here is what is wrong:

There is not enough contrast between W, the building, and the statue. Asthetically this was done to convey the message that our President is a rollup the sleeves working man (with a work shirt on vs. his usual suit) and that he 'blends in' with N.O. vs. the appearance he is trying to overcome within the black community that he was somehow outside of or above them and thus did not help them.

Those are nice subliminal messages but they don't work because there is too much monotone in the image thus giving the appearace that W's head is somehow floating between the building, his shirt, and the statue.

And in this picture there is a cone on his head...

or a horn.

I think the whole thing looks blue screened. I bet he wasn't even in New Orleans. I bet that's not even a podium. I bet it's a urinal. I bet that his handlers just had him give his speech while standing at a urinal to avoid any embarassing potty-break note passing between him and Condi (that one should get MM riled).

Stick with the tie GW

When I heard the words "can't imagine an America w/o New Orleans" I knew we were in trouble.

I wish he had the courage to do what needed to be done. But he does not.

You want to rebuild the city - fine. But don't rebuild it in that damn soup bowl. Move it 30 miles north, you fix the problem.

200 billion of your tax dollars are being thrown in the ocean...

This happened when I had my college ID picture taken. My shirt was the EXACT same color as the background. It looked like my head was floating and nobody could tell the difference. It always worked to pull out my ID when somebody needed a good laugh.

Said that right after flood, and this has been predidated for how long?

So are they going to raise the height of the soup bowl to what 100 ft.
to truely try and protect against a direct hit CAT 5.

This is a complete waste of money.

Check out what Brian Williams from NBC news posted this morning, following the Bush speech last night. Illuminating. Or in this case, not:

Brian Williams
NBC News 9/16/05

I am duty-bound to report the talk of the New Orleans warehouse district last night: there was rejoicing (well, there would have been without the curfew, but the few people I saw on the streets were excited) when the power came back on for blocks on end. Kevin Tibbles was positively jubilant on the live update edition of Nightly News that we fed to the West Coast. The mini-mart, long ago cleaned out by looters, was nonetheless bathed in light, including the empty, roped-off gas pumps. The motorcade route through the district was partially lit no more than 30 minutes before POTUS drove through. And yet last night, no more than an hour after the President departed, the lights went out. The entire area was plunged into total darkness again, to audible groans. It's enough to make some of the folks here who witnessed it... jump to certain conclusions.

It is impossible to over-emphasize the extent to which this area is under government occupation, and portions of it under government-enforced lockdown. Police cars rule the streets. They (along with Humvees, ambulances, fire apparatus, FEMA trucks and all official-looking SUVs) are generally not stopped at checkpoints and roadblocks. All other vehicles are subject to long lines and snap judgments and must PROVE they have vital business inside the vast roped-off regions here. If we did not have the services of an off-duty law enforcement officer, we could not do our jobs in the course of a work day and get back in time to put together the broadcast and get on the air. As we are about to do.
