View Full Version : Chiefs Planet no longer a football site?

As a rival fan I have been coming to CP since the KC star board break-out to catch up on what a divison rival is doing. I also go to several other rival boards and general sports boards.

I just realized something about CP that kind of bums me out: this year, for the first time, CP is not a football site but a general discussion site where football, among other things, is discussed in depth.

Today is a football Friday, KC is coming off of a bye and facing an important game. Yet on the front page of CP there are only 7 football posts (including a Teicher article and news of Mr. Hunt's Health) and 16 non-football posts ranging from such weighty topis as "who is the next James Bond" to "Top rated movies" to "Hey" weirdness.

Not only has the football discussion volume dropped off but many of the Chiefs posters I used to look forward to reading are gone or have greatly reduced their presence.

Perhaps it's an inevitable evolution but now, for the first time, I would reccomend CP as a cool Chiefs/social board but not as a football-first fan board.

Well, maybe they could split the Lounge (which isn't supposed to be fooball only), off and add a football only forum. Not being sarcastic here, I just don't think it would work, based on what I have seen here. I know I haven't been a member long, but I have lurked for the past 2 years and it's pretty much been the same. You've been here as a member for 4 years now, when did it stop being all football?

I came for the football, I stayed for... well the football and other stuff.

I like how the planet basically is your one stop source for just about every article or news related item on the Chiefs... not to mention our own thoughts and opinions.

I can never find anything in the media or any sports authority that hasn't already been posted to the Planet... saves time, I don't have to search anymore.

I sure haven't noticed any difference in the time I've been here. I'm sure less than 20% of my posts are football related. Football threads invariably end up in "is too", "is not" arguments. That gets old real quick so I don't spend much time on them.

No thanks ROFL

I'm not saying anything negative about your board, just commenting on a change that I noticed. It started last year but has really come on this year. There are a lot of posters who have come here in the last couple of years who post as much if not more non-FB posts as FB.
I guess CP has been around long enough to attract full-time internet dwellers as opposed to drop-in posters who are focused on football only.

This is a cool board, it just feels different.

I have been here during your arc and I don't see any difference. Gaz did post more in the past but he slowed down a couple of years ago. Most of Gaz's posts are football or movie revues. And, he once mentioned that our rough language offends him so that could be part of it. But, the Planet has always had that "Neighborhood Bar" feel. While looking at all the threads I've started the other day, I noticed how few of them are football topics. Without the game threads, football is probably 15% of them. I like it this way. If this were strictly football only, I wouldn't be here nearly so much. This place is truly unique. I've never seen another site like it.

So, if you're a football fan willing to criticize this site, why do you come here and join in discussions on non-football threads? I'm slightly confused. If you don't like it, find another site. Just my opinion though.

Seems to me that CP has never been a “strictly football” site. Its humble origins in the KC Star revolt [“No moderation without representation”] pretty much assured that condition. Whether this is good or bad is another issue altogether.

The relative scarcity of football threads on the front page this week can, I believe, be chalked up to the fact that we are coming off our bye. The pace will soon accelerate. Whether this is good or bad is another issue altogether.

However, I do understand vailpass’s perspective. There are times, when the Planet is littered with stupifyingly inane threads, that a “football only” forum seems like a Good Thing to me.

But I do not see how that could be accomplished without a repressive moderation regime. Sure, there are times that I wish our Moderators would operate with a firmer hand, but that’s just delicate little old me.

Given the alternatives, the Planet is probably the best I can legitimately expect it to be.

Once again, I would like to beg, plead, whine and cry for an IGNORE THIS THREAD function. That would be way kewl and would be a major upgrade in my Planet surfing experience.

BTW, how was the gig last night?

It went real well, considering we are the imperfect band.

We didn't get beat up. Our equipment didn't get broken up. We got paid.

All in all, not a perfect night, but I'll take it.

Not only has the football discussion volume dropped off but many of the Chiefs posters I used to look forward to reading are gone or have greatly reduced their presence.

I concur! Even during game weeks, this place isn't what it used to be for me. I used to log on, and couldn't tear myself away because the discussions.... I repeat, discussions... about football were very solid and interesting.

I still check in here nearly every day. But that is mostly to read the articles from the Star Sports page. Usually, I am in here and out in less than 15 to 20 minutes.

So in all reality for my personal life, the decline of the ChiefsPlanet football topics/discussions is probably a good thing.... but somehow I sort of miss what the Planet used to be.

there was a time when you could find any Chiefs article that was on the net posted here. With in minutes of being published.

Now it seems eveyone waits for someone else to post them. Then when they do they get criticized for posting an article by "that" author & it's not just Athan's stuff. Usually those who do the complaining never post articles. Frankly they just like to complain. Why should someone go to the trouble of posting them, only to be hassled

The reason I hang out here is the open topic forum. I am not around as much as I used to be but still enjoy this as one of the best sites on the net. I have seen a lot of people come and go some, I miss and others I was glad to see go.

I hang out at a pretty cool Oakland site but it is football only, and after a bit I get bored and want to read or talk about something else. When I meet someone in life be it on the net or in the real world I like to see where their head is at. We may have met because we like football or eat at the same place, work together or whatever. When I talk with them the topic changes, that is what makes this place work so well.

I have met many people here and had the chance to meet several in person. Guess what when we drop the you like another team thing we find out we like alot of the same things and become friends. Football only forums do not afford you that chance as much IMO

So, if you're a football fan willing to criticize this site, why do you come here and join in discussions on non-football threads? I'm slightly confused. If you don't like it, find another site. Just my opinion though.
He (Vailpass) joins plenty of non-football discussions. Just do a search for him under the Washington DC forum. Caution: He could make a longshoreman blush.

Is this supposed to be a strictly football forum, or a forum for Chiefs fans to come to chit chat? It's good coming somewhere where you know you've already got one thing in common with people. I may not post a lot about football, but that doesn't mean I don't read the football posts. It nice to know that I can come here when I'm bored, and find that there will almost always be someone interesting or drunk to talk to.

No, its not a football site. Its a freaking cyber football bar that is populated by Chiefs fans and other bums that blow in from week to week.

I've seen him in the past week. It shows his last activity having been yesterday.

He's posting very little or I think I would see him. I started a thread about his inactivity about two weeks ago.

CP to me is like a sports bar. The main reason we are here is to talk about Chiefs, but while everybody is there other topics come up.
