I want to buy a 40 gig usb hard drive for my laptop, but I'm having a hard time deciding which one I want.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what's the best kind to purchase?

Thanks in advance.

If your laptop has Firewire then get a firewire drive instead. USB sucks.

unless you want one of those tiny external drives, you should just buy a USB hard drive enclosure imo

then you can just buy a regular hard drive and later upgrade it anytime you want.

does your laptop support usb 2.0??? makes a big difference

My laptop supports USB 2.0, no firewire though.

It's basically so my fiancee can backup all her important teacher's stuff and some of my resumes/cover letters, etc..

I'm just basically using it as a backup device.

2.0 is pretty fast ... a huge difference over 1.1

regular hard drives are pretty cheap and enclosures are only 10-20 bucks.

easy to setup and use

just my opinion

Laz,

Thanks for the advice. I think I need to get a USB drive so my fiancee can easily connect and disconnect to use it on multiple comps..

Do you have any advice what types are the best external USB ones to get?
