I have a WinXPpro Pent4 machine in which I need two network cards.
One to talk with the world.
The other is for 4 instruments to talk to the computer.

The primary is working fine until I plug the cat5 into the 2nd card.
Then neither work.

Is it automatically creating a network bridge?

I'd be looking for hardware conflicts. Sorry I can't be more help - I'm far from being an expert when it comes to system administration or hardware troubleshooting.

You're probably not holding your mouth right.

Do you mean Musical Instruments?

Both cards have 3 settings that are of primary importance:

IP Address
Netmask
Gateway (or default route)

Your problem is that both cards have their own GATEWAY. When you plug in the 2nd card, it's changing your routing table and using the 2nd card's default gateway, causing traffic destined for the Internet to traverse the wrong card.

Go into the settings for the 2nd card and delete the Gateway for the 2nd card, only the 1st card should have one.

If the devices connecting to the 2nd card need to access the Internet, make sure that packet forwarding is ON.

Thanks for the input guys.

Saulbadguy - I don't know from bridges.

KC Jones - yeah, I think that is what I said.

Endelt260 - mouthholding isn't my strong suit.

SLAG02 - No, analytical instruments (Gas Chromatographs)

Htismaqe - Thanks, I will try that tomorrow.

I have cleared all my communications problems with the exception of this net card conflict. I just realized that I have another computer that is running two cards successfully. I will check it's settings tomorrow as well and emulate if possible.

Thanks guys.

Htismaqe is da man! His analysis was correct. All should avert their eyes in deference when a paragon of knowledge, such as Htismaque, enters the room.
