The Chiefs have allowed opposing offenses a third-down conversion rate of 34.9 percent this year, good for 11th in the league.

This is an improvement over last year, when KC allowed a rate of 38.4 percent, 20th in the league.

This stat might be misleading, as KC's defense has defended only 83 third-down attempts, the third-fewest in the league.

Discuss!

what % of 1st and 2nd down plays result in another 1st down?

Good question. I don't know that any site has the numbers on this.

San Diego - 36.9% - 16th

i think puke fella got it right...

if you make 1st downs (or touchdowns) on 1st or 2nd, then you don't need a third down, do you?

I thought about this for a while. I decided to check out how the other teams are doing on 3rd down, and how that related to scoring defense and total defense. I have listed the defenses by league rank in 3rd down completion % against, total defense, and scoring defense. They are listed in that order:

Tampa Bay:
1, 1, 3

Chicago
2, 3, 2

Jacksonville:
3, 7, 9

Tennessee
4, 16, 27

Atlanta
5, 23, 12

Dallas
6, 5, 6

OK, here's another way to look at it, FWIW. Of all the first downs they allow, the Chiefs give up the highest percentage in the league on 1st or 2nd down.

Total first downs: 141
Made on 3rd down: 29
Made on 4th down: 2
Made via penalty: 8
So, made on 1st or 2nd down: 102 or 72.3% of total made

In contrast:
#1 Washington-49.5%
#17 Miami- 61.0%
#31 Atlanta 71.0%

Don't know exactly what this means, other than that I have way too much time on my hands.

what team is worst at allowing a 1st down when it's 3rd and 7+ ? i'll bet we're at or near the top.
