Instead of blowing up an incoming asteroid, maybe we could divert the sucker and have it land in say, L.A., or some other inhospitable place.

Not that it matters, but the actual date is December 21, 2012, not the 23. There are multiple theories on why the Maya picked that date to end their long count calendar (actual name is unknown) with some people believing it is the end of the world. The Maya believed the world had different ages and that this date would be the date that the world would enter its next stage. The significance of this day is that an astrological event. On the date of 12/21/2012 the Winter solstice sun will rise in the center of the Milky Way galaxy as seen from Earth. The Maya believed this event brought about the creation when the father (sun) and mother (Milky Way) came together. The sad thing is the Maya predicted an astrological event thousands of years ago that until recently we were not able to predict.
