Patriots put Starks on injured reserve

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Duane Starks was placed on injured reserve Thursday with a bad shoulder, ending the season for the cornerback who replaced Ty Law in the New England secondary.

The 31-year-old Starks, acquired by the Patriots in March from Arizona, played in seven games with disappointing results. Starks was benched for the second half of Monday's 40-21 loss to Indianapolis after he was beaten by the Colts' Reggie Wayne for a second-quarter touchdown.

Law, a stalwart on New England's Super Bowl teams, was released last offseason. He signed with the New York Jets.

Part of a defensive backfield that has been mostly ineffective this season, the 5-foot-10, 174-pound Starks had 26 tackles and no interceptions.

Starks was drafted by Baltimore in 1998 out of the University of Miami. He returned an interception for a touchdown during the Ravens' 2001 Super Bowl victory.

Holy crap. Who do they have left in the secondary? Is Belichick gonna have to trot out there and play some safety?

Its refreshing to see the Patriots blow an offseason like they have.

Yeah, Starks sucks.

Seriously, no idea. Rumor is he's been hurt all season with some kind of shoulder issue. All we know for sure is that we traded a 3rd and a 5th for him (got him and a 5th back from Arizona) and he's been absolutely, unbelievably, incredibly bad. He's been the target of choice for opposing QBs, and has given up more 20+ yard completions than any CB I can ever remember seeing.

That's after, of course, he was initially a backup. He was only plugged in after Gay, Scott and Poole all went down with injuries.

eh. I spent the first 20 years of being a Pats fan watching them screw up every way possible. Getting things right has been a novelty the last few years. :)

Seriously, 2 weeks ago we started Arturo Freeman at Strong Safety. he'd been with us for TWO weeks. The week after he started, we cut him.

Mike Reiss had a piece on this today. Note that since Starks was cut, this Sunday will make 8 different combos in 9 games.

"The Patriots have had seven different starting secondary combinations in eight games. The breakdown:

Game 1: Samuel-Poole-Harrison-Wilson
Game 2: Samuel-Gay-Harrison-Wilson
Game 3: Samuel-Starks-Harrison-Wilson
Game 4: Samuel-Starks-G. Scott-Wilson
Game 5: Samuel-Starks-G. Scott-Wilson
Game 6: Samuel-Starks-Sanders-Wilson
Game 7: Samuel-Starks-Freeman-Wilson
Game 8: Samuel-Starks-Gay-Wilson"

Wow man, just wow! Hard to get the job done with that turnover.
