I have tickets tomorrow night to see Les Miserables in Kansas City (I know, I know -- there are a few of you that think it's garbage. I do NOT, so leave me alone) and I have a press screening to Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire on Sunday after the Chiefs game...

Now Harry Potter, on the other hand... :)

I'm going to Les Miz on Sunday afternoon.

I know - during the game but it was free!

I'll have to check my cell phone for scoring updates - plus my dad's taping the game.

Don't really care... I love Les Mis, and the HP films are pretty enjoyable. But in the least, they'll both get me laid about four times this weekend. Say what you will -- I'll be getting more pussy than you.

I hate to say it, but if I had free tix to Les Mis versus watching the Chiefs game on TV, I'd probably tape the game. Now, I'd be damn sure to stay the hell away from anything that could give me any game information and I'd watch it as soon as I got home, but I'd probably do the theater and set the DVDR to record.

Furthermore, I don't think that really has any bearing on my status as a Chiefs fan... Free tix to something I love versus watching something else I love on TV that can be taped and viewed later.

Now... if it was free tix to Les Mis versus free tix to Arrowhead on game day... Arrowhead every time.

I'm actually in Warrensburg, and I've done it several times. It's not that hard, really. Don't turn on the radio, stay away from places that have a lot of people, don't turn on the TV until you're ready to watch the game, put the DVD in and watch. Around here, I once went four days without hearing ANYTHING about the game. In 2002, I had to miss a Sunday game and wasn't able to watch until Thursday... just like gameday for me because I didn't know ANYTHING! Of course... I hadn't watched a lick of TV or turned a radio on and any time someone started to say anything I screamed and left the room, but it all brand new to me when I saw it.

BUT, nevertheless... I'm not the one seeing Les Mis over HP. I'm going Saturday night. My HP tix are AFTER the Chiefs game... I'll be watching the game with everyone else.

Please nevermind the spellings, they're probably wrong and I don't have time to look them up...

I was VERY impressed with Eponine... I thought Cosette was pretty good, and the understudy we had for Valjean was very nice. I thought Fantine's performance was decent. This was without a doubt the best Thenadier I've seen, although I wasn't fond of Madame Thenadier.

But I was THOROUGHLY unimpressed with Javier... he took WAY too much liberty with the music, didn't have the vocal range to perform Javier (his range drops out on the low end, VERY important for a couple of the songs) and he didn't seem menacing at all to me. Mostly, I absolute despised his character choices and his liberties with the music. His themes are written to be very straight forward, very patterned... they're written in straight rhythms, partly to indicate character -- this is a by-the-book man, regimented, hard and fast. The frilly, loose vocal inflection he put in there detracts from the character quality. I didn't like it.

All that's just my opinion, though.

Awww - you got the shaft! I saw the regular Valjean (Randal Keith) and he was awesome - truely awesome - would give you chills. We also got the understudy for Javert and he kicked all kinds of ass - sang it straight and powerful.

Eponine - She was good but has the misforture of having to live up to the expectations set by Sutton Foster (she later won the Tony for "Millie") in the role. Plus I thought her upper register was a little shrill - and there were a few points where her harmony was off.

Fantine - Gah - this was the same actress who played Fantine on the tour I saw about seven years ago. I can't stand her interpretation - she has a decent enough voice but she's a horrible actress.

Marius/Cosette - Good but nothing special.

Gavroche/Young Cosette - Annoying and bad singers. These are two of the most coveted "little kid" roles available - this was the best they could find?

Enjolras (aka - the guy that waves the red flag and sinds "Do You Hear the People Sing") Very good - great powerful voice - would've been a better Marius than the guy that played him.

After that shitty Chiefs game, I should have gotten matinee tix. Bummer. The Valjean understudy we had was very good. I was impressed. I've seen the show at least five times (can't quite remember) and he was probably the second best I've seen. You're right about Marius and Cosette... good but nothing special. Gavroche was really cardboard. He had a decent enough voice, but seemed like he was scared out of his wits. The young Cosette you had was the young Eponine we had, so I can't really say anything about her. The young Cosette we had was pretty good. Not great, but good enough.

Enjolras was good, and I really, REALLY like the performance of Grutaire (the drunk).

My review of Les Mis saturday night...
The spinning stage was cool.
There was a circus next door, so parking sucked.
I thought it'd be cool to sit in the balcony for the first time at Music Hall... till 300 people walked in 10 minutes in and I missed an entire act.
I think Eponine may have been hot, but was too far away to really tell.
The innkeepers were cool.
and the rest of the set was cool in it's functionality.

You were at the same one as me, and yes, that ****ing Shriner's circus was a nightmare.

The spinning stage has always been one of my favorite things, very cool. The parking made EVERYONE later than they wanted to be... consequently, a ton of people were locked out until after Valjean's first solo (something like hte first 15 minutes, they shut the doors and won't let anyone in or out (unless emergency, obviously). I was pretty close, and Eponine WAS hot... no doubt.

The Loge is where the best seating is - better than most of the orchestra.

Les Mis has a 13 min hold at the beginning of the show - meaning that once the orchestra starts playing no one goes in or out of the theater for 13mins. That's plenty of time for a million people to build up on the other side of the door. At most shows they would be seated during the overture when nothing is really happening. But they had the problem with the mass stampeed after the hold at every performance.

Still annoying - the show starts at 2 - how hard is it to be in your seat at 2? I guess I just get cranky because I always try to be there at least thirty mins before curtain.

I understand that folks are going to be late, but to make it more bearable, they should have the ushers outside of the place explaining to the people where their seats are and let them find them one by one, instead of allowing the huge rush of people walk in, talking and stumbling around for their seats.
It would take longer, and still be an annoyance, but wouldn't force me to miss so much.
