Gotta love Steve Alford. They'll win 10 straight here soon and start the Big 10 season with everybody talking Final Four.

Then they'll lose to Northwestern or Penn State and finish below .500 again.

Don't you think last years failure had to due somewhat with the loss of Pierce?

Don't you think last years failure had to due somewhat with the loss of Pierce? It's not just last year though. It's every year under Alford. Great early season play, hit the conference schedule and collapse, then make enough of a late rally to keep Alford his job. He's had some good teams seriously under achieve in the past, I won't expect otherwise until it actually happens.

I hesitate to open this can of worms again, because there's certain Hawkeye fans here that liked Pierce and/or new him personally or something.

My HUMBLE OPINION is that the guy was athletic as hell but made alot of stupid mistakes with the ball.

They beat some pretty good teams early last season with Pierce, including Texas and Louisville. But to me it comes down to the Big 10.

Without Pierce, they went 5-2 against Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue, Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State.

With Pierce, against that same field, they went 1-5.

So, I guess beating the mighty Rainbow Warriors of Chaminade does count for something...along with about 50years of history & tradition.

Yep. I've completely lost interest in Iowa basketball because of him.

Plus I have a buddy that had an off-the-court incident with Alford that colors my opinion...

There's some damn good teams in the MO Valley from year-to-year. Between Wichita State, Creighton, Southern Illinois, and UNI, you're always gonna have a contender...

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/scores101/101324/101324345.htmThat seems so very long ago... kind of like the 3-9 season in football in 2002.

This is the year everything's been building up to. The Tic Price era was a nightmare, and when Cal came aboard, things slowly started to be pieced back together, frustration at not making the tourney/not advancing far enough aside; now is when that work starts to pay off.

This 05-06 team is the most ridiculously deep, ridiculously athletic team I've ever seen. I still cannot fully fathom just how amazing they are.

This is all 2nd-hand, so take it for what it's worth.

A couple of years ago, in the late spring (after yet another Big 10 collapse by the Hawks b-ball team) a guy I know was at the soccer fields in Iowa City watching his kid play soccer.

Let me preface this by reminding you that Alford is VERY outward and open about his religion. You remember the whole WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) thing, right?

Anyway, this guy was either walking to (or from) his car at the soccer field when he spotted Alford walking in the opposite direction/coming towards him.

He said "Hey coach" as Alford walked by him.

Alford's response?

"Go **** yourself, buddy."

Agreed, I wish Direct TV would modify the college basketball offering. I would love to have the option on the MO Valley and Big 12. The way it currently works, most of the games I get are of no interest to me.

Baskerville Holmes is my all-time favorite sports name.

I'm still not certain how they lost when they had Andre Turner running the show and William Bedford banging down low with Lee.

"Go **** yourself, buddy."

I pretty far from being an Alford fan, but I have a hard time believing he said that.

Being the eternal optimist I am, I think Iowa finally has the break out season Iowa fans have been waiting for.
A team full of seniors, and a down year in the Big10 should be enough for a Top 3(in the Big10) finish.

Anything less, and he should be fired.

I'll be at the Wake Forest vs. Wisconsin (ACC-Big 10 Challenge) game on Tuesday night.

I guess that is #23 vs. #27.

Wake Forest hasn't looked great early this season. Tons of turnovers (with the loss of Chris Paul) and lousy free throw shooting (by Eric Williams in particular).

They are now trying a freshman at the pg spot because Justin Gray can't seem to handle it (and it makes it harder for Gray to score as much).

If they can learn to break the press and Williams can get his FT% back up to his sophomore year numbers, Wake can go far. Without that, I predict another heartbreaking loss early in the NCAA tournament.

Why? The $EC, aside from UK (mainly because they suck in football), does not care about Basketball. They have some decent teams, but overall, meh.

$EC would work out better though because they have 12 teams.
