Douglas County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.
Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural Douglas County. In a series of interviews late this afternoon, Mirecki said the men who beat him were making references to the controversy that has propelled him into the headlines in recent weeks.
Mirecki
“I didn’t know them, but I’m sure they knew me,” he said.
Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck.
“I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind,” he said. “They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out.”
He said the men beat him about the upper body with their fists, and he said he thinks they struck him with a metal object. He was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
“I’m mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots,” he said.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Officials are classifying the case as an aggravated battery. They wouldn’t say exactly where the incident happened, citing the ongoing investigation
The sheriff’s department is looking for the suspects, described as two white males between ages 30 and 40, one wearing a red visor and wool gloves, and both wearing jeans. They were last seen in a large pickup truck.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS or the sheriff’s office at 841-0007.
Mirecki recently wrote online that he planned to teach intelligent design as mythology in an upcoming course. He wrote it would be a “nice slap” in the “big fat face” of fundamentalists.
The remarks caused an uproar, Mirecki apologized, and KU announced last week the class would be canceled.

So those who use the same logic,.,to bash all democrats and liberals....based on the actions of the lunatic fringe and the radical extreme, are justified in your view?

The Phelp's Compound in Topeka is not that far away from this. Christianity is bashed because in all things there are extremists and the few ruining it for the many. It is idol worship also. It is a magnet for and promotes insanity.

Anyone who accepts that, is either intellectually lazy.....or just plain stupid. One of the two.

I never said it was justified, right? I ust pointed out how this illustration lends itself to an understanding of why those on the "fringe" are seen in a certain way.
I, personally, don't accept any type of blanket statements. Whether that be about Christians, Liberals, Conservatives, Gays, Muslims, etc. However, sadly, I understand why people do when I hear stories of this tenor. I've seen and lived too many exceptions to rules, to accept the fact that all are like the public focus of a group, but like I said, I understand why people feel that way.
I guess it's just my job to be one of the guys who tries to change people's ideas. Sadly, in most cases, that makes me the bleeding heart liberal in the world.

True. However, most of the mythology that Christianists believe in and allow to ruin their lives is leading them down the path of a mental breakdown.

I guess that it is like anything. You and I have opinions that are not the same. We can both find propaganda from each side to back up our feeling as though they are fact. Extremism is the main mental disorder. Every group has its extremists. I say and agree with many experts. Believe in God, and respect others as you respect yourself. JudeoChristianistMuslimism is tearing our world apart. Orthodox members of all of these groups are helping to create devides. Only most Hebrewites and Christianists have evolved to the extent that they do not resort to terrorism.

This has nothing to do with the fact that right wingers give her so much attention...falling over themelves about the shit she pulls. And most moderates and even lefties care very little about anything she has done...
Kind of like the mediocre book that gets great sales only because the publicity that comes about from someone wanting it censored.

Topeka must be a breeding ground for idiot Christian fundamentalists. There was a funeral in my hometown of Galesburg, Illinois a couple weeks ago for a soldier that was killed in Iraq and a group from a Baptist church in Topeka was there protesting, of all things, gays in the military right outside of the funeral home. Luckily, some students from Knox College stood in front of them so the family didn't have to see the idiot protestors. If I was the father of the soldier and I saw those idiots at my son's funeral, there would have been some funerals in Topeka a few days later.

The Strange Tales of Paul Mirecki (http://townhall.com/opinion/columns/michellemalkin/2005/12/14/178998.html)
Interesting, indeed. :shake:
I'm not saying it didn't happen as the fine Professor says, but let's at least gather all the facts before jumping to any conclusions:
The professor first created controversy in November after penning an unhinged e-mail message expressing his desire to deliver a "slap" to the "big fat face" of the "fundies" by teaching an intelligent design course "as a religious studies class under the category 'mythology.'" The message was sent to the mailing list of the university's Society of Open-Minded (snort!) Atheists and Agnostics. Mirecki signed his taunting diatribe "Evil Dr. P."
Mirecki can't remember where the incident took place, according to local law enforcement, and has offered only the vaguest of suspect descriptions. There are conflicting accounts about Mirecki's physical appearance the day of the attack. While a faculty colleague claimed that "big swollen spots" had "transformed" Mirecki's face, Jesse Plous and Tiffany Jeffers, two of Mirecki's students, told the campus newspaper they didn't notice bruises or scratches when they met for his class six hours after the alleged attack. Lindsay Mayer, another student in the class, "said injuries weren't extremely noticeable." Mirecki did not mention the alleged beating in class.
The truth is there are too many cases of hate crime hoaxers on campuses -- a phenomenon most left-leaning journalists are loathe to cover -- to dismiss the possibility in this case. Last year, Claremont McKenna College professor Kerri Dunn was sentenced to prison after she staged an anti-Semitic hate crime against herself. Earlier this year, a lesbian student at Mt. Tamalpais High School in Marin County, Calif., faked several anti-gay incidents to garner attention and sympathy. Leah Miller, a black student at San Francisco State University, admitted to scratching "NIGG" on a dorm room door and writing herself a note with the same epithet. Jaime Alexander Saide, a Northwestern University student, admitted making up anti-Hispanic threats against himself after the school rallied around him with "Stop the Hate" marches.
Strange, isn't it, how leftists on campus who sneer at blind faith are so often fooled by it themselves
