... know it was Hans on the roof? Or did he simply suspect it? He obviously gave him the gun with the blanks, but I wonder if he actually knew it was Hans, due to the comment about the accent.
... and if so, why didn't he just off him right there, other than the fact that it would shorten the movie substantially.

Im going with suspicion...which is why he gave him the gun, but no bullets.

I still think it was super-sharp of Hans to have quickly scanned the employee directory on the wall and picked out a name -- and used the familiar "Bill" instead of "William." Brilliant.

didn't McClane just think the guy was some whiney civilian- I thought he just wanted the guy to feel safer, but didn't want him to have actual bullets... I don't think at that point he had any idea that it was Hans

I haven't seen the movie in a long time, but I'm going to watch it when I get home... good question

I'm going to watch it right now- but I seem to recall that he just thought the guy was a nervous-type citizen and gave him the empty gun so that he would feel safer but not be a danger to others... I'll be back in two hours to let you know my thoughts after re-viewing

No. After Hans turns the gun on him and says something to him, McClain with no surprise reaction what so ever says, "Well well, Hans". Then after Hans attmpts to shoot him McClain takes the gun back and says, "You think I'm f#cking stupid, Hans?".

My guess is he didn't know it was Hans, but he suspected that he was ONE of the terrorists.

Transcript of Angel and I's PM about this where I quote the movie as best as I can from memory....

Angela says:
this sucks- I was all set to watch Die Hard when I got home, and now that I'm home, I realize... I don't own Die Hard!!! You did, and I thought I did... but I don't
Matt says:
Doesn't that just suck...
Angela says:
so now I have to decide if it's worth going back out in the crazy snow...
Angela says:
yes
Matt says:
By the way, I'm not sure if Mclane really knows it's Hans or not, but he's definately thinking it's him.
Angela says:
I'm really confused, and I want to watch it
Angela says:
really badly
Matt says:
He asks, "What's your name?"
Matt says:
Hans replies, "Bill.... Clay"
Angela says:
did Hans ask for the gun?
Matt says:
No.
Angela says:
hmmm
Angela says:
are you watching it?
Matt says:
Hans has a gun on the ledge around the corner that he's trying to get to.
Matt says:
No...
Matt says:
I've seen it a million times.
Angela says:
I had when I was little, but not for a while
Matt says:
Hans puts his gun down to climb over something.
Matt says:
Then you see Johns feet step into frame.
Matt says:
John points the gun.
Matt says:
Hans: "Oh God, you're one of them aren't you... Don't kill me please, don't kill me."
Angela says:
so Hans has the gun when John first sees him?
Matt says:
John: "Relax.. Relax! I'm not gonna kill you."
Matt says:
(the gun is around the corner.
Angela says:
does John know the guy has a gun, or it's hidden?
Angela says:
right, ok
Matt says:
John doesn't see it.
Matt says:
I'm getting to that part
Angela says:
ok, sorry
Matt says:
So, relax...
Matt says:
relax...
Matt says:
Im not gonna...
Angela says:
*relaxing*
Matt says:
yadda yadda...
Angela says:
right
Matt says:
Then he says something like: "What are you doing up here"
Angela says:
he's suspicious
Matt says:
Hans: (edging his way around the corner)
Matt says:
"Some of us managed to get out of there, I thought we might be able to get up to the roof... signal for help or something."
Matt says:
John: They're all over the roof.
Matt says:
Hans: "It's just this way, if you follow me."
Matt says:
(trying to get the gun)
Angela says:
hmmm
Matt says:
John: I said relax, I said they're all over the roof. Look, you want to stay alive, stay with me.
Angela says:
I don't think he's suspicious of him yet
Angela says:
at this point
Matt says:
Then Johns asks, "What's your name?"
Matt says:
Hans: "Bill... Clay"
Matt says:
John then checks the list of names on the peg board in the construction area (that Hans can't see) and there is a "Clay, Wm" up on the board.
Angela says:
hmmm
Angela says:
very clever of Hans... that's what they were talking about
Matt says:
John: "You ever fired a gun before Bill."
Matt says:
Hans: "Well I once went on this weekend retreat. You know those guns that shoot paint?"
Matt says:
John: "Well, get ready for the real thing."
Matt says:
(Then he cocks the handgun and gives it to Hans)
Matt says:
Hans stands there kinda dumbfounded at how stupid John is. and picks up his walkie talkie.
Matt says:
As John is walking away, he points the gun at Johns back and says someting in German into the walkie talkie.
Matt says:
John turns around with a "here we go again" kinda look on his face. No fear at all...
Angela says:
as if he expected that
Matt says:
John: "Well, well, well. Hans. That's a pretty tricky thing you do with that accent Hans."
Matt says:
Hans: "Where are my detonators?"
Matt says:
John: "You should be on ****ing TV with that accent."
Matt says:
Hans: "Give me my detonators."
Matt says:
John: What do you need the detonators for Hans, I already told you I used all the explosives... Or did I?..."
Matt says:
Hans: I'm going to count to three.
Matt says:
John: "Like you did with Ellis?"
Matt says:
John walks forward to Hans very slowly. Without counting, Hans pulls the trigger...
Matt says:
CLICK... CLICK... CLICK...
Matt says:
John: "oops, no bullets! (taking the gun) what do think I'm ****ing stupid Hans?"
Angela says:
so... conclusion: John had his suspicions that it was Hans, and he gave him the empty gun to make sure...
Matt says:
(The elevator dings)
Matt says:
Hans: "You were saying?"
Matt says:
THEN GUNS START GOING OFF LIKE CRAZY AS THE OTHER TERRORISTS GET OFF THE ELEVATOR...
Angela says:
so, I'm wrong
Angela says:
he didn't necessarily know it was Hans, but he was pretty sure
Matt says:
What did YOU say. I didn't read the thread...
Angela says:
I said he thought the guy was just a weird citizen and gave him the gun so that he would feel safe, but wouldn't hurt anyone
Matt says:
I don't think so. But the one thing that might lead you to think that is that Hans gets lucky when he makes up the name and there just happens to be a William Clay in the building...
Angela says:
right
Angela says:
hmmmm
Angela says:
I'm reeeallly tempted to go out and buy it right now
Angela says:
or... I could use my coupon at Blockbuster and rent it... get some food while I'm out...
Matt says:
I think the script is probably ambiguous, but the way Bruce Willis plays it, there is pretty much no doubt that it was a ploy to get Hans to out himself. If Hans DOESN'T try to shoot him, then he can always give him a real gun later...
Angela says:
yeah, I think you're right

I love finding flaws in movies, or at least what seem like flaws. Here's one for Die Hard:

Hans seems to know quite a lot about Takagi. Consider when he is walking around the starled party goers, rattling off facts about Takagi; his age, education, family, etc. Yet, he doesn't know what he looks like?

Peh.

I just read the script online... There are a TON of lines that were changed from the script to the movie with this scene.

Also, my earlier transcript missed a small part...

John: You smoke?
Hans: Yeah.
Hans: So, you don't work for Nakatomi, and you're not one of them...
John: I'm a cop from New York. I got invited to the Christmas party by mistake... Who knew?

Hans sees John's bare feet.

John: Better than being caught with your pants down right?

Also, it wasn't "Ellis" that he counted to three with, it was Takagi.

I just read the script online, and according to the script, he didn't know it was Hans at all, but I still think he was suspicious.
I don't think he gave him the gun to make him feel more comfortable, if he was a civilian, after thinking it through. I think he gave him the gun to see if he actually was one of the thiefs (I won't call them terrorists, because they were just there for an elaborate robbery).

I watched it again last night and McClane was definitely suspicious. In fact, he checked the employee directory before he introduced himself to Hans (expecting the guy to offer his name in return). I think just the fact that McClane didn't flinch when he turned his back on Hans, heard him speak German into the radio and cock the revolver strongly indicates he expected something like that.

The script may have said he didn't know it was Hans, but the way Willis played the scene it suggests he had an inkling all was not what it appeared to be.

I'm watching right now, and I just figured it out. Whe John hands Hans a cigarette, and he lights it up without any reaction, he had to know then. European cigarettes are stronger, and the fact that Hans had no reaction to this had to be the tipoff.
