I've been a movie junkie for about 10 years. Tonight, I drove by Borders. They had their "Buy 3, get the 4th for free" sale. I had to stop. With tonight's additions to my collection, I have well over 1,100 DVDs... I don't have a current count on my VHS movies. How do I break the cycle? :deevee:

I've got a buddy who's the same way. I can't invite him over for a movie, because the bastard has them all. I finally gave up... I let him bring the movies.

I have over 350 DVDs, but certainly less than 400.

Now I don't feel like nearly as much of a dork! :D

I don't have that many, but I fear i'm on the way. I'm a sucker for "Special collectors editions" and shit like that.

I don't have that many, but I fear i'm on the way. I'm a sucker for "Special collectors editions" and shit like that. What gets me is how many versions of certain movies I've had. For example, first, I recorded Casablanca on a VHS tape off cable back in the 80s. Then I bought the studio VHS tape. Then I bought an anniversary edition VHS tape. When I got my first DVD player, this was one of the first DVDs I picked up. THEN I bought another anniversary DVD. NO MORE. :banghead:

I've upgraded most of my old VHS tapes to DVD, including expensive sets like the original Star Wars and Godfather series. I bought all the LOTR movies in first run and expanded DVD versions. Often I'll buy collector's/director's expanded editions of movies I already own on DVD because they promise expanded versions or deleted scenes, which in the case of the former I generally barely notice, and in the case of the latter watch only once. And sometimes, like in the case of Last of the Mohicans and The Abyss, the expanded version SUCKS.

Basically, that's a lot of money pissed away. And don't even get me started on the 15 or so DVDs that I've bought AND NEVER WATCHED. :shake:

I hope DVDs don't go out, because I don't plan on repurchasing this shit a third time (at least).

:cuss:

I'm bad about that. But damnit... I know they're there when I decide I want them.

Some of them I've had for years. Generally, they're ones I saw on sale for $5 or got free because I got something else. Most of them still have the wrappers on. I get the feeling that if I haven't watched Air Force One and Arlington Road after they've sat on the shelf unopened since 1990-whatever, I'm probably never going to. I should look into getting rid of some of them, but I don't want to. I'm a packrat - that's my shit, and I'm keeping it. So what if I'll never use it again? :spock:

I'm a bit pickier now with what I buy - I try to only buy movies that I actually think I'll actually watch more than once (or at least once).

12-27-2005, 09:32 PM
Have you heard of the female gender? :hmmm:
Well, I'm married... so yes.

I'm a sucker for Criterions... that's what I bought tonight. Four... expensive shit, too.

I picked up Good Morning, The Honeymoon Killers, The Sword of Doom and Unfaithfully Yours.

I'm a HUGE dork when it comes to movies. My wife isn't much better, which doesn't help the situation. However, I'm not completely stupid. I have a separate insurance policy on them. When you have over 1,000 of anything, it becomes an investment, I think.

As a filmmaker myself, I'm morally opposed to doing that... sorry. I sincerely feel like that's taking money away from the artists that strive to give you and me entertainment. It's only fair that I be willing to pay for it. I hope someday someone's paying me for the stories I tell them.

I was so ****ing pissed when they released Simpsons season 6 in the "Homers head" version, but thank goodness FOX (bastards) made an alternate packaging available, for a small fee.

Sometimes there is no widescreen. Nothing prior to the mid-50s has it, and occasionally modern movies don't. For years I looked without success for Full Metal Jacket in widescreen, only to find out (just recently) that it was shot by Kubrick in 4:3 (normal TV aspect).

I remember when I was a kid he'd occassionally try to play an 8-track for me, and the tape would snap because it was so old and brittle.

Besides, I'd rather own full-quality versions of the movies I do own on DVD (most rips are 4.3 GB), and there's just something nice about owning the OFFICIAL version of the saga/lotr, etc on DVD with the boxes and art and crap.

The first film shot in Cinescope (the first-ever widescreen) was 1952's The Robe. So, if it was shot prior to 1952, no widescreen -- original aspect ratio is 4:3. Kubrick shot a lot of stuff 4:3. Eyes Wide Shut is that way, too. The way to tell on a DVD if it's original aspect is 4:3 is to look for the box that says it was formatted to fit your screen. If it's a pan/scan version, that WILL be printed on the back.

I really don't see how anyone could forget Fire Me Boy! is married at this point. Every time I see him post I think, "Yeah, no sympathy for my poor retarded wife!"

Well, I guess assumptions, although admittedly ill advised, are easily made when posting in regards to someone in whom you have not had much knowledge of.

In other words: Hey, I didn't know; I've not replied to, many of his threads or read many of his replies. I hope this clears up any confusion you might have had regarding my post. :D

Who has time to download 1,000 movies?

Besides, I'd rather own full-quality versions of the movies I do own on DVD (most rips are 4.3 GB), and there's just something nice about owning the OFFICIAL version of the saga/lotr, etc on DVD with the boxes and art and crap.

Storing 1500 DVDs sucks.

I almost wish they were all downloads that I could just shove in a little folder.

He used to work in a Pawn Shop.

College kids would bring in their hundreds of DVDs to pawn for beer money, and then lose their pawns... He'd pick up huge bundles for whatever they loaned out for. Sometimes $100 for 100 DVDs.

But I can't think of a better revenge, than getting all his DVDs in a divorce and sending them to you. :p :p

It sure is. That was just a day job while he was waiting for his night shift at the strip club. Oh. So I could stay home and raise our children.

Someday you'll see a pretty naked lady.

I have not seen that! But now I desperately want to.

Boondock Saints is a phenomenal movie. I don't understand why it's so under the radar when everyone I've ever known that has seen it, has loved it.

I had never even heard of it the first time I saw it.

As a filmmaker myself, I'm morally opposed to doing that... sorry. I sincerely feel like that's taking money away from the artists that strive to give you and me entertainment. It's only fair that I be willing to pay for it. I hope someday someone's paying me for the stories I tell them.

Thats not really true...

First off, the people that do this were never going to buy your stuff anyway...

Secondly the artist does not see profits outside of sales purchase... IE walmart just bought 1000 copies of your movie, you got paid for those 1000 copies.. More then likely those 1000 copies will never sell that many... So they will not be buying more... And even if they do, your ten cents per cd/dvd will not be worth it..

Well unless you are selling them out of your house or local business you are not making squat on sells..

Hey Rausch...I saw Vanilla Sky last night. Total mindf*ck.

I wish there had been more...is there stuff on the DVD?

Yep.

The extras show Tom dragging his tongue behind Penelo-....that smoking hot latino gal.

He might be bi, but he sure as $3it ain't gay-only. Good stuff in the extras. What's-his-nuts (the director) was absolutely anal about shots being perfect.

I loved the movie.

It presents everyone with a question at the end that defines who you are. Are you, do you choose A or B?...

Tom Cruise is enough to get me to not watch a movie.

The irony of what happens in the movie and what happened to him in real life, during shooting, is worth the price of rental...
