Just signed a record breaking contract for an assistant coach in the NFL.

Can get out next year, but scratch him for this year.

After Jeff Fisher, he was the best choice, IMO.
Oh well, good luck to him.

The hottest name on the coaching carousel is officially off the market.

FOXSports.com has learned that Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has signed a record-breaking contract for an assistant to prevent him from interviewing for a head coaching post elsewhere. Sources close to Williams said early Tuesday that Williams agreed to a new three-year deal worth nearly $8 million, well above the financial terms for any coordinator in the NFL.

Williams also agreed not to interview for any head coaching openings this off-season but, according to the source, it doesn't preclude him from taking a gig next year. The source also said that the biggest overriding factor was the fact that his family loves living in the Washington, D.C. area and were ecstatic with the new deal.

Williams was a top candidate in Minnesota, St. Louis and Kansas City, although the Chiefs are expected to hire Jets head coach Herm Edwards.

well, Mortenson was right for once...that's what he predicted...Snyder wants him to take over for Gibbs eventually....

funny how a great coordinator one place is handed the keys and the cash while a superior coordinator is shown the door in KC...

Apparently. I always thought Gregg Williams had ambition to be head man again. Probably still sees Drew Bledsoe when he closes his eyes.

Promising him the job after the HC retires?

What a novel idea, I wish we would have done that here...

Gibbs isn't staying around that long. He's looks like Methuselah over there. This deal is definately to keep GW in place to take over the reigns.

And the inferior coordinator is kept in KC. It's gonna be HC Edwards with DC GC. Anybody up for a wager that GC is kept?

I read the story, i know he can go get a head job next year, and he is getting a boat load of money. But, I have to believe that Snyder wants to keep him in the fold for more than one year, otherwise what is the point - just to keep him around for this offseason? He can't be hired till the get knocked out anyway. He is obviously overpaying him to stick around in hopes that he is the head coach after Gibbs... But, then again, I know n-o-t-h-i-n-g.

sat high to greg next time you speak to him.

First of all, let me say I have NO idea what this guy's situation/contract is like, but let me say that everyone is sleeping BIG TIME on Monte Kiffen.

I'm left to assume he must be sealed in Tampa forever, because otherwise he would HAVE to be commanding attention.

Kiffin doesn't want to be a head coach, that's why no one pursues him. He's also pretty old, so that's another strike.

I doubt he'll do that. I don't think Herm had any say whatsoever in who were his coordinators in NY. Bradway picked them. And Carl will pick them here, and he will try to keep the offensive staff in place, and he will most certainly keep his 2nd best buddy (now probably his first best) Gunther Cunningham.

Problem is, after it is all said and done, we will have done nothing to address our glaring weakness in brains on the defensive side of the ball, and we will have lost DV and AS. The players know the offense, so it might not take a huge hit, but Herm isn't going to be able to help Gunther turn it around.

I guess we might an experiment in place. Was it DV's softness or Gunther's idiocy as to why we were so bad in D. I think we will soon find out.

Roger the old part, but i've never heard or read anything about the lack of interest in being a HC.

If he wanted to be a head coach, he could have named his price after the Buc's won the bowl. He's still there, that tells me he doesn't have the desire to be a head coach.

This if from Clayton's newest blog:Line of succession in D.C.: No one should be surprised by Gregg Williams' decision to stay with the Redskins. Williams would have gotten at least one or two offers for a head coaching position, but instead accepted a three-year, $8 million deal to be Joe Gibbs' defensive coordinator. Williams is expected to follow Gibbs in a couple years when he retires. The good thing for Williams is that he will become a better head coach learning from Gibbs, who is a Hall of Fame administrator. For owner Dan Snyder, he now has his next coach in place and will be able to keep franchise stability.
