Chiefs | Chiefs trade Edwards for Manning
Wed, 4 Jan 2006 13:17:03 -0800

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the team has agreed to trade new head coach Herm Edwards to the New York Giants for Eli Manning. The deal sets up a new commercial where Eli cheers for the "May I help you?" lady at Gates and asks the sandwich guy at Jersey Boys for his autograph.

The Winfield deal falling through hand nothing to do with money. His wife apparently hated Long Island.

As for Herm being underpaid, he should. The guy didnt even have coordinator experience prior to taking the Jet gig. Plus, Herm signed the contract, no one had a gun to his head.

My biigest fear with Herm is that he'll keep Gunther as DC. This is based on what was said by Jared Allen yesterday.

This is the same thing I went through last night when I posted the Jared Allen thread.

His quote had nothing to do with Herm.

All he said was "Gunther's not going anywhere."

I'm sure he said that because right now Gunther IS his coach and he WANTS to believe he'll be back.

I wouldn't attach anything to Allen's quote to connect it to Herm Edwards. There's no connection at all, IMO.

That is my reputation, and I've worked hard to maintain it.

However, my only concern with the prospect of Al getting the job was the possibility of Gun being retained.

So I guess what it amounts to is I would have been happy with Al getting the promotion, Gun's status notwithstanding.

I have a question -

Outside of Saban, who was the last coach to go from college and have success as an NFL head coach (I personally think the jury is still out on Saban, though Miami appears to be heading the right direction)?

One of the guys that I was high on is Mike Bellotti, the head coach of University of Oregon. An article in the local paper was saying that he was drawing a lot of interest from the NFL.

I don't think that I have ever seen a coach who was so able to get the most out of his talent on hand. It's easy to dominate when you are Miami or USC and have the pick of the talent, but Bellotti consistantly has the Ducks ranked pretty high despite rarely having NFL type players.

I started to cool on the idea, though, when I was trying to come up with former college head coaches that had success in the NFL. Who else has done it since the salary cap came into play? Jimmy Johnson flopped after the cap.
