View Full Version : Need Auto help

I am auto illiterate. I cannot get my car from park to drive; it is stuck in park. I've checked the fluid and it's full. The kicker is that there is a possibility that foul play may be involved. I'm open to all possibilities.

Thoughts anyone?

Have you put the key in the ignition and started the car? :p

Is the wheel turned hard one direction or the other, if so move it off the lock and the car should go in drive providing you have performed the above function.

Sounds like the ignition interlock is hosed up.

A bad Neutral Safety switch perhaps?

Geez, I feel like I've just called a computer help desk; YES I STARTED MY CAR. I said I was auto illiterate; not retarded or blond. :p

Try turning the steering wheel to "unlock" it.

Steering wheel turns easily, but I cannot put the car in gear.

What about the brake pedal switch, is that the nuetral safety?

What kind of car is this?

I'm wondering about that also. When I press down on the brake to put it in gear I feel an unusual resistance.

A "97" Mercury Sable.

I had that happen in my Dad's Taurus. Do not fight the resistance. I got angry, stomped the brake pedal and it broke a switch that is in place to prevent you from putting your car in gear without having the brake on.

Oh damn. No wonder. The Highway Patrol has come to your house and disabled the vehicle. Nobody wants that POS on the road. Call them. They'll be able to help you arrange to have it disposed of properly.

It's almost certainly the brake switch, which is located right above the pedal.

Sounds like you and I have much in common, lol. Thanks for the advice; I didn't stomp on the brake, but I did increase the pressure I put on it.

It's double when you quote me and pretend you aren't paying attention, though.

You can't be offended by my POS comment, Greg. I have a 97 Ford product as well. It's the big F-350. I hope to sell it soon.

Although, I must admit I probably wasn't in the best of moods at the time having sent my son packing off to school, and wasn't sure how I was going to get to work. :shake:

Not to my knowledge, however, Tuesday afternoon my boss saw A car speeding away from my car when he left to go home, and it looked suspicious to him.

Do you have something against Blondes? Retarded people can not help it.

I must admit, my response was inspired by that "On Star" commercial where the gal calls needing help unlocking the car.
