I keep hearing passing rumors of this happening after the sprint center in built. Any truth to any of this? Have you heard anything more than what I just wrote?

penguins have always been my favorite NHL team since I was wee high...I can't imagine seeing them as the KC Penguins..that is just plain weird!

there's talk about the Sonics wanting out of Seattle and listing KC as a possible target. Apparently the city isn't going to approve rennovations to their arena when they build the Mariners and Seahawks both brand new stadiums.

The Pens have an agreement in Pitt to build an arena with Isle of Capri casinos. It is still pending approval from the state govt, since it's a casino and all, so it's still up inthe air. If they don't get the arena, they are gone, and it's between us and Portland (I like our chances).

I'm following this one as closely as I can... getting hockey would be huge.

I'm a fan of neither the NBA nor the NHL, but damn, that would be cool.

huh...they wouldn't use the sprint center? that doesn't make a lot of sense. Why would you build a whole new arena when you have a perfectly good, brand new one going in right now. I guess they need the money from casinos to pay the salaries?

On a side note-I see kansas caving in at anytime and cashing in on non-native, non-riverboat casinos.

Btw-isn't isle of crapri the worst casino in KC? I have been there once and WAS NOT impressed at all. :(

This would be interesting, and has been the rumored team for the last few years. I would hate for them not to be in Pittsburg really, because before I was an Av's fan (and really before I watched Hockey more then a couple times a year) the Pengiuns were my favorite team.

Boy, then I would really have an issue of which team to root for.

He was talking about a casino/arena in Pitt, if they moved here it would be the Sprint Arena.

I understand. As a huge Red WIngs fan (I have Center Ice, so I watch most of their games) I would have a dillemma as well. But I think if we had a pro team here, I would be a fan of them, and just root for the WIngs when they weren't playing the KC team. The rumor, as far as the WIngs go, is that when KC gets a team, the KC team moves to the Western Conference, and the WIngs move east, and with the way scheduling is now, they'd only play once every few years, unless in the Finals.

there has been rumors of the Penguins coming to KC for years. Their ownership is writing checks they can't cash. They owed Mario millions of dollars from salaries that they didn't pay him, which is why he is now a co-owner. Once he got involved in the team, he needed some more revenue which is why he came out of retirement.

There is nothing like watching a hockey game live. The action is intense. I just hope KC can pull something off to get a NHL team here.

The last time the penguins were in Columbus, the people were looking at the Arena district to get ideas on what can be done within the area of an arena. It sounded as if they were seriously going to build within the Pittsburg area and not elsewhere. It would be interesting if the Pens would leave Pittsburg, but odder things have happened.

Wow, no more real wings/av's rivalry, that would suck. Those were always some of the best series of the playoff's.

I REALLY hope that they land an NHL team for the Sprint Center and they happen to land in the Red Wings division. That would mean four of five Wings game a year in KC. Woo Hoo!

Sully, do you think the NHL would move Detroit or Columbus to the East?
I would think the NHL would want to move Columbus to the East and let the Wings remain in the West for competitive balance purposes.

Totally agree - basketball might seem on the surface more accessible to the fan base around here, but hockey is much more fun to watch in person than NBA basketball.

Plus, our streets will be a lot safer with hockey players in town rather than NBA players.

Heh, see how much I pay attention to the NHL, I thought this was going to be about the KC Zoo getting a penquins exhibit!

oh believe me, I have followed the team through the years... I knew as soon as they traded off jagr that the fairy tale from the early 90s was long gone and any chance of ever making the playoffs again.

I just didn't know about the whole situation with the casino in Pitt.

I'd love to see a blues/pens matchup in league play. That would rock my socks off.

The division I saw, if KC gets a team, would be KC, Minnesota, St Louis, and Chicago (I think). I'll check and get back.

Morph,
The WIngs/Avs rivalry is dying anyway. Since that jackass Lemieux is gone, and even Foppa and Roy are gone, there are few villains on the Avs for the WIngs to hate anymore. McCarty being gone from the Wings is probably the same from the other side.

Epitome,
What you said is exsactly why I think we should go NHL instead of NBA. There is plenty of basketball for folks to fall back on f we had an NBA team that failed. But once people get hooked to Major league hockey they are hooked for good. It's a great sport, with great personalities. I just think it'd be better long term in KC than NBA.

Pens also got the future of the NHL on their team in Crosby. :)

By the way, hockey is the second best sport after football to watch live.

I saw a minor league hockey game in Seattle against a team from Portland some years ago. I didn't follow anything about the two teams but, as I understand it, both teams were already in the playoffs so the game we went to was meaningless. They played like it for a few minutes until some fans started a "Portland Sucks" chant that everyone picked up. Next thing you know the players were getting fired up and the game got heated. I thought some of the players might not walk out under their own power at the end. One of the best live games I've ever seen.
