Outfielder Brown beats Royals in arbitration

Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Emil Brown (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5756) defeated the Kansas City Royals (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=kan) in salary arbitration Thursday and will get his request for $1,775,000 rather than the team's offer of $1.4 million.
Brown set career highs last season by hitting .286 with 31 doubles, 17 homers and 86 RBI for the Royals, who had the worst record in the major leagues at 56-106. He made $355,000 and became eligible for arbitration for the first time.
He played with Pittsburgh and San Diego from 1997-01, then spent three years out of the major leagues. Kansas City signed him in December 2004 as a free agent.
Brown's case was decided by arbitrators Margaret Brogan, Jack Clarke and John Sands, who heard the case Wednesday.
In the only other case argued this year, pitcher Sunny Kim (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6427) lost to the Colorado Rockies (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=col) and will make $600,000 rather than $800,000. Thirteen players remain scheduled for hearings, which run through Feb. 20.

I've heard several people that knew Mr. K well say that he wouldn't lose millions on the team every year either. He was too good of a business man for that.

I think what a lot of people don't realize is that in a different era, Ewing Kauffman = David Glass.

I'm sure you're being sarcastic, but releasing either of those 2 would be moronic. Also Emil was the best player we had last yr. and he should have made th All Star team instead of Sweeney, so he deserves his cake. GO :Royals: !

WOW. The Royals got jobbed on that one. How can a guy who is one of the worst fielders in the game win his arbitration case? He probably gave up as many runs with horrid defense than he contributed on the offensive end.

I don't know about errors, but Brown had better offensive numbers than Carlos Beltran last year.

He did not. Back when he was the owner, payroll was like 10-15 million dollars a year, if that, across the board. Now the Royals have a 50 million dollar payroll and they still are at the bottom end. I think the idea that he'd be out there spending 100 mil a year to compete with the big boys while losing 40 million a year is a fantasy. He couldn't do that, that'd be 400 million dollars lost a decade, no person in their sane mind would do that.

Not to mention what truly gets lost in all of it, was the David Glass was Mr. K's handpicked guy. Glass was the head of the board of directors when Mr. K died, he was the #1 top guy under Mr. K. There's a reason for that. People still treat him like an outsider though. I think Mr. K would be shocked at the way the public treats David Glass today.

Losing arbitration is not a big deal. Wow, he costs us an extra 375,000.

Their payroll is still only 46 million.

Glass said it would be 50, he's got some extra cash.

The A's got a sweet deal with Frank Thomas. 500k if he doesn't put up numbers, about 2 mill if he produces.

The one weakness we had last year, right handed pop, full time for real DH.

Add a year of seasoning salt to the rest of them, great closer in Huston Street. This could be the year for us to make a run.

You're fooling yourself if you think you're going to get shit out of Frank Thomas. He's a washed-up bum.

No 20-game winners, but Eaton and Millwood both have solid resumes and Millwood had a 2.86 ERA last year. Had he been on a decent ballclub he'd have had 20 wins easy.

I expect the Rangers to compete with the A's for the division this year. This is easily the best pitching staff we've had in years.

the a's will be in las vegas soonThe last time I checked, they don't have an adequate facility in Vegas, which, is exactly the same problem the A's have in Oakland. ahhhhhh. thanks for playing.

The A's will be staying in Oakland although I wish they would move out to Pleasanton, Concord or Sacramento.

They have the framework for a deal to build a new stadium across the parking lot from the current venue. With the new Eminent Domain powers that the Supreme Court gave to the government, it will happen.

As a returning season ticket holder, I will be in line for tickets when it happens.

We lost a lot of 1 and 2 run games early in the year, hopfully we can go 500 in April and May, then turn it on like we always do in the Summer.
