I told her about all of the Dateline NBC specials on child predators and she blew me off. I have no parental right 1200 miles away. Whos gonna bond me out for killing a child molester so I dont miss the season opener?

Myspace is a funny little animal. I joined up after some girl I met at a bar told me about it. (Cause, y'know, I learn about everything at bars.) Then I started surfing around and finding people I went to college with, and people I already partied with in Phoenix. Every couple weeks it seems I get a message from someone else who knew me in college. Just got one tonight from an old fraternity brother.

Personally, I think the website sucks ass. Like, I dig the concept behind it... but, the implementation BLOWS. But, I put up with it cause now my friends are on there... and, some of 'em... particularly the out-of-town old college friends... use it as a primary means of communication with me.

Friendster.com is a funny story. Dude takes the idea to a bunch of VC and explains how they will all be able to measure their d**ks against eachother on who knows more people, they jizz their pants and give him ~$23M in startup money.

Dumbass then runs off to some magazine and admits in an interview that it only took him 3 months and 6 developers to create the entire system, basically screaming to the world "you can compete with me for $20k in no more than 3 months". His company hasn't been the same since.

You have to have a liscense to drive as well.

True, but my point still stands. The solution isn't prohibition. The kid will just find a way around your prohibition. On top of that, it's doing a disservice to the kid to turn her into some Luddite in this day and age. The answer lies in making the kid keenly aware of how easily their personal information can be harvested and just how many sicko bastards are out there.

02-09-2006, 12:13 PM
First off, breathe. Secondly, be glad you know of the site's existance because now you are EMPOWERED to help keep her safe. It's the parents who do not know about these things who I feel sorry for. Make sure you let her know you are keeping an eye on her and not to spy but to make sure she is being smart about her site.

You will need to monitor the site constantly. Check for any details that might be used to track her down. Encourage her NOT to put her picture on her site. If she must, encourage her to photoshop colors or distortions that will make indentifying her more difficult.

A friend of mine has a teenage daughter who was all pizzed off because her mother was reading her Xanga (similiar to myspace) and asking her about it. She did not want her mother reading her 'private' posts. I told her she was being alittle naive to think that her mother will not or should not read it when she's basically allowing, even inviting, the entire world to do so. (My friend thanked me...) And you must stress this to your daughter as well. Her expectation of privacy is completely non-existent on the internet.

If done safely, these websites can be excellent sources of creativity and expression for our teens. I would not approach this as being a threat to her unless you see things on her site that would be a danger to her. If anything, you might learn something about her and her friends by sharing in her site. Take the opportunity to do it!!!!! Look at this as a gift to get to know your daughter in ways that she wants to be seen and as others see her.

And, if you still don't trust her judgement. Put someone you trust up to contacting her to see how she responds...of course, in the end you'll have to tell her you did this. But again, it was to protect her.

Good luck.

They seem to think that only people they want seeing their xanga, myspace, or facebook will see it. It's a pretty big shock to them when they realize that their parents, teachers, ministers, youth directors and the like can see everything they're posting on their blogs.

Well my son, being a butthead, chimed in 'just make your site private.' He was promptly kicked under the table. :) Of course then not everyone can link to it from others because it's password protected and what fun is that?

And yes, I agree it is a shock to them when they realize a teacher they've been b*tching about on their site can actually read what they wrote. It's a hard lesson for them to learn but better someone 'safe' like their teacher or minister than some predator.

Yes, by all means, keep the foot on her throat so she rebels later in life and makes multiple appearances on Montell Williams about how she hates her father.

The real problem is that you think you have to know EVERYTHING going on in her life. Educating her about the predators of the online world isn't asking for her password so you can snoop on everything she does.

Kids should have privacy. Parents should have some confidence in their kids and their parenting ability.

You should like you have very little in your child, which is why you have to play internet watchdog constantly.

Unless it said all your social security numbers and nasty stuff about his little brother, I can't understand why you would shut it down.

If I was 16, and I was a myspace addict, I would post stuff about my siblings.

I really don't get the big deal. If he was 10 and doing this, it might be different. But some 16 year olds are juniors in high school and in 2 years will be participating in orgies in college.

More power to him if cares to join in an orgie as an ADULT in college. I doubt very much in that case he'll be blurting out personal information about his family though or about himself for that matter. I don't care if he wants to have a cyber orgie with all of his friends on the internet either at 16 but you leave your personal information out of it and especially info about your siblings or parents. Because if I can find you and read comments about his friend list to gather more info about you then you become an easy target for a freak lurking My Space.

I just want to commend those parents on this thread that care enough to be aware of what their kids are doing on the internet.

I have 3 computers in my house. The 2 with internet access are in the front room where everyone can see whatever is being viewed at any time. The third computer is in one of the kids' rooms but does NOT have internet access (he is 14).

My 11 year old has been asking for an e-mail address and we have told him that when he is 12 he can get one. In the meantime, we have allowed him (and the other kids in the house, we do afterschool care for 3 children) to set up an account on www.whyville.net. Whyville works hand in hand with the parents. They insist on parental involvement by getting an e-mail address for the parent, sending confirmation to that address as well as the childs user name and password information. If your child changes their password, you get an e-mail! This is a site that truely cares for the safety of those using the service.

That's a great attitude. Are you a parent?
I don't care if they don't care. I don't care if they express to me that they don't care.
Is it a barrier or hurdle for them to get something over on me? Yes.
If they get caught breaking those rules or stipulations of being grounded does it become worse for them? Yes.
Do they want to be doing absolutely nothing but setting in their room for a month? No.
In my case my son wants to go out on a date this Friday with this girl that he is absolutely crazy about. Will he enjoy staying home and not even having conversation with the girl for a month other than at school? No.
Grounding works especially if you allow your child to have freedoms and opportunities and objects that suddenly are taken away for disciplinary reasons.
If they don't have anything they won't miss anything is the only place where your theory comes in.

I am not a parent, but i do know, that when i was grounded as i got older, i just laughed. I just left. I was like what are they going to do? they couldnt really do much. I wasnt at total dumbass though , i never was in trouble with the law or anything. Was mostly about school. I just didnt take "you are grounded" very seriously after a while. I just was like yeah yeah. Soon as parents were at work or went somewhere, i was gone.

Edit- grounding only works when they are very young. once the teens hit. its a joke.

Parents never jacked any of your stuff as punishment?

In an alternate dimension where I am a parent, if my kids acted up I'd just take away their crap. That always worked pretty well with me.

No phone, no TV, no computer, no NUTHIN.'

My 19 year old tried that once, not to long ago, but since I am the lien holder on his car, and his insurance carrier and landlord and banker, he hasn't tried it since...ROFL

I had the best punishment for my daughter when she was in High School, when whe got into trouble that required a seriouis lesson or attitude adjustment It ook her cell phone. I know most are saying big deal, but the real punishment is that I crried it with me and left in on, when her friends would call I would answer saying that it was her phone and I was her Dad. Her friends would ask to speak to her, I would tell them that I had taken the phone for whatever offense she at committed, then proceeded to ask her friends if they disobeyed their parents in the same manner. Needless to say, I only had to do that twice, and then all I had to do was threaten to take the phone and she straightened up. Embarrasement works wonders on teens. Now she is in college and as long as she wants her Mother and I to pay for her college, she has to meeti my requirements, grade point avg, respect when she is home, that sort of thing. :p

I just read through this whole thread and would like to say.......some of you need to lighten the hell up. Some of you act like every single person on the net is a Rapist, Molester, Serial Killer or trying to steal your credit cards. I think that's a bit much.

I'm sure talking about how your little brother pisses you off when you're 16 is going to be the death of you. And people wonder why kids rebel against their parents.......

Everyone isn't mecca.

All it takes is 1, who aquires interest and personal info on your sister/daughter.

There are people on this very board, who have had some pretty serious problems with people from the internet, interfering in their personal lives, due to personal info on a football site.

now...imagine your 12 year old sister is fluffing her hair, saying she's 17 and putting pics of herself in a bikini on myspace.

"HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) -- Police are investigating whether as many as seven teenage girls have been sexually assaulted by men they met through the popular Web site MySpace.com."

I want to clarify that my problem isn't with the site itself, the idea behind it, or kids being on it.

My problem is, the kids feeling of privacy, and chatting with friends. They disclose too much personal information(city born, date of birth, name, hs, graduation year, parents names, sometimes including maiden names) as well as personal information about their likes, fears, dislikes, that provides information to psychos...not to mention pictures, that usually show them partying etc.

Another reason to be cautious?
Employers, HS staff(in sports? Have pictures of you drinking on myspace?), committees for things such as NHS(national honor society), employers and college admissions offices are ALL looking at your kids' pages.

I was reading a message on my son's band's MySpace (Vedera) and saw a message asking them to come to Australia. So I clicked on her avatar and saw that she lives in Townsville.

Well, I have 2 nepews, a sister and bro-in-law in Townsville so I sent her an email to tell her that the bass player in her favorite band has cousins in her hometown down in Australia.

I think she is a teenage kid and I sent her an email. I feel like the cops will show up and haul me off any second.

I just put myself on there and the only thing I have on there is the same picture I put of myself on here. I put no information about myself on there. As far as I am concerned the only people that will be my "friends" on there are people I allready know.
