Those who have tried it, tell me a story! I have wanted to tangle with this mysterious drink for quite some time and finally get my chance this weekend. Any good advice, funny stories, bad experiences??? Let's hear em! :toast:

One shot of Deva 70 about 5 years ago; almost died.

Never again.

Had some Jagermeister a couple weeks ago at a party, though. That's pretty good stuff and i'm not a spirit drinker really.

I do not think any of it is 100 %, maybe 70% alcohol by volume and 100mg of psychoactive Thujone

I bought a bottle for New Years (120 proof) and ended up being the only one drinking it. I don't have a proper absinthe spoon so I just set a couple of cubes of sugar on a fork and tried melting them with a lighter but it took forever. I think a blow torch is the way to go!!!

After it was all said and done I would just pour a shot in a glass and mix in some sugar and water and down the thing. Three shots was all I could handle that night.

Just a note...don't try lighting the absinthe while in a plastic cup!!! It's surprising how fast this stuff killed my few remaining brain cells.

you have to use the spirits to carmelise it.

FTR- good Shine is a far better buzz.

So is the goal to carmelise the sugar cube or to completely dissolve it? I read somewhere that it takes a lot longer to dissolve the sugar cube once you dip it in the absinthe.

How to drink Absinthe

The easy way

1. Take two to four shots to feel effects.
2. For fast results, place bottle upright to mouth, tilt, and consume.

Water & Sugar
1. Pour a shot of Absinthe into a glass.
2. Place an Absinthe spoon on the glass and place a sugar cube on the spoon.
3. Slowly drip four to six parts of iced water onto the sugar melting the sugar into the Absinthe.

Absinthe, Water & FIRE!
1. Pour a shot of Absinthe into a glass.
2. Dip a teaspoon of sugar in the Absinthe so that it absorbs it.
3. Set the sugar cube on an Absinthe spoon and place it on the glass.
4. Set the sugar cube on fire and allow all the caramelized sugar to flow into the glass.
5. Pour the water over sugar cubes and into the glass and stir.

Jesus, just go buy a f*cking rock down in the square for 10 bucks and be done with it. Probably a better buzz with half the trouble!

OR

Just rock up some blow...same shit

The stuff is unreal, just dont overdo it. 5 shots MAX, and that is if you have a high tolerance.

I did that. It's the "Czech Way" tastes terrible.

I think of wine as a "warm" drunk, beer is a "lazy, full" drunk, whiskey is the "angry" drunk". Absinthe is the "disorienting" drunk.

and trying to get back home in streets where I didn't know the language made for an interesting trip. :)

Real absinthe is illegal in the U.S.

The liquor store versions aren't absinthe.

I've heard that Everclear is actually worse for you than absinthe. It doesn't have the hallucinogenic effects of absinthe, but a higher concentration of alcohol.

it smells like tequila but tastes like the baby jesus.

sometimes you get cookers who dont "burn the top" and its alittle bitter, but then you get guys who are all about the product and its the smoothest whiskey ive ever had.( somewhat akin to single barrel irish malts)

You used anything but corn to make it? Bran, barley, rye....?

After reading about absinthe on this board for a few years it seems that it would be easier, more palatable and you'd get a better buzz if you walked around the woods and licked toads.

Corn mash IMO is the best abit sweeter and more sugar, rye mash is to smokey.

Aren't JD or some of the other brands corn mash? If so, what's the diff?

MOhillbilly

Aren't JD or some of the other brands corn mash? If so, what's the diff?as far as i know sour mash is what it says, a corn based mash(easier to convert the starches into sugar), you can get 'green label' mash which is rye ect. never had barley or potato mash ect.

edit-corn is cheap and the corn slop can be reused.
