Vikings sign quarterback McMahon to two-year deal
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Minnesota Vikings signed quarterback Mike McMahon to a two-year contract on Thursday.

Advertisment

McMahon, who was released this week by Philadelphia, will be the backup for Brad Johnson.

"It's a great opportunity for myself, a chance to learn from Brad and see how he prepares," McMahon said. "I'm very excited."

After four seasons with Detroit, starting three games in 2001 for the Lions and four games in 2002, McMahon spent last year with the Eagles under offensive coordinator Brad Childress -- who is now Minnesota's head coach.

McMahon, who played his college ball at Rutgers, played in nine games for Philadelphia last season and went 2-5 as a starter after Donovan McNabb went down with a sports hernia. Known as an athletic presence in the pocket with a strong arm, McMahon has had problems with his accuracy. He completed 94 of 207 passes (45.4 percent) for 1,158 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions last year.

The Vikings also had a pair of free agents in for visits on Thursday, strong safety Tank Williams and defensive end DeQuincy Scott. Williams has played the last four seasons with Tennessee, grabbing one interception last year. Scott has played the last four years with San Diego, recording 4 sacks last season.

Cowboys get their kicker

02:33 PM CST on Thursday, March 23, 2006
By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING The Cowboys have their kicker.

Mike Vanderjagt, the most accurate kicker in NFL history, signed a three-year with the Cowboys Thursday morning, according to agent Gil Scott, ending the team's long-standing attempts to find a kicker on the cheap. The deal also includes a $2.5 million signing bonus.

It worked for years, especially when the Cowboys were winning Super Bowls in the 1990s, but that thinking imploded on them last year, playing a big part in why they did not make the playoffs.

After seeing Jose Cortez, Billy Cundiff and Shaun Suisham combine to make just 20 of 28 field goals last year including costly misses at Seattle by Cortez and vs. Denver by Cundiff owner and general manager Jerry Jones admitted he needed to address the position.

Signing Vanderjagt does that, but the Cowboys almost found themselves out of the loop. They had little contact with Adam Vinatieri, who took Vanderjagt's job in Indianapolis, and saw their top target, Matt Bryant, re-sign with Tampa Bay. They were paying attention to Olindo Mare's future in Miami, but could not wait around for him to possibly be cut.

In eight years with the Colts, Vanderjagt, who turns 36 Friday, made 87.5 percent of his field goal tries (217-of-248), including an NFL record 42-straight field goals, spanning two seasons. He made all 37 attempts in 2003 and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl.

Last season he made 23 of 25 kicks and was seven of eight from 40-49 yards. The Cowboys' kickers were a combined three of seven from that distance in 2005.

But Vanderjagt is not strong on kickoffs and has not performed full-time in that role since 2003. Coach Bill Parcells has said in the past he would not be in favor of having a kickoff specialist because he values the gameday roster spots so much. With Vanderjagt he may have to alter that thinking.

Cowboys to play preseason game in Shreveport: While nothing has been officially released by the NFL, it does not appear as if the Cowboys will be playing in the annual Hall of Fame Game this summer in Canton, Ohio. However, they will be playing against New Orleans at Shreveport's Independence Stadium on Aug. 21.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN's Monday Night Football and will pit Bill Parcells against his former assistant head coach Sean Payton, now the Saints coach.

With Troy Aikman and Rayfield Wright set for induction this summer, the Cowboys appeared to be a natural fit for the Hall of Fame Game, but the Cowboys were already in talks about playing a game in Louisiana. Because training camp is in Oxnard, Calif., the travel plans would have been prohibitive. There have been reports that Oakland and Philadelphia will meet in the Hall of Fame Game.

No dome currently for vanderjackoff in big D.

The weather can be tricky expecially later in year for kicking.....

Traveling to NYG, Philly, Washington outside won't be a picnic either. I look for his numbers to drop.

If they sign Larry Allen back this team should be pretty dangerous. This seasons draft will only help them. I bet the draft a CB with their first pick. Maybe Tye Hill or something I dunno.

Dallas actually has a PARTIAL dome. There is a hole in the roof, but the majority of it is covered. Plus their NEW stadium will have a retractable roof.
