I just watched my first episode and other than the plot involves polygamy there sure does not seem like much to make it controversial. Unless you consider the everyday trivial details of life controversial.

It pickes up some in the next two episodes. I can see some of stuff in the third episode being controversial.

I feel pretty much the same as keg. Kind of liking it but not sure why. My friends that have watched say the same things.

Because it is on after the Sopranos-and it is hard to change the chanel on a show with sex and nudity in it.

You know how, every once in awhile, your wife will get all horny and attack you? That guy gets it every night. He just rotates through and they get horny by the time he gets aroud to them. There's also a competition factor. That's a sweet deal, but probably not worth the hassle.

You know how, every once in a while, your girl gets all crazy and makes you wonder what you were thinking when you got into that relationship? That guy gets that times three. There's also the psycho competition factor. Sweet deal? Hardly.

Hot wives? Chloe Sevigny is a fuggin skank. She looks like a tranny.

As for the controversy, it's coming from the same people that think teh ghey is contagious if it's on TV too much. But they're all at church beating their bibles this morning, so I doubt they'll comment until later.

I haven't heard much "controversy" about it, suprising as much as there was pertaining to the show recently about the Episcopal minister and his family...

But it is an interesting show, with an interesting premise. It runs the danger of becoming boring to those who haven't already decided it is, if the story lines start to march down the predictable path they seem to be headed toward.

The only discussion I've seen [albeit on TWoP and hometheaterforum] is whether people like the show or not.
Not exactly a raging debate.

This is among my 'elite' shows, Lost/House/The Wire/the late Deadwood and Sopranos.

I don't know if it qualifies as 'the everyday trivial details of life,' but I love how you can change your opinion of so many of the characters so many times over the course of an episode or season.

Bill - earnest, materialist, self-involved, dolt, oblivious, frantic, wounded,
Barb - mother, resigned, romantic, harried, wanting more, Boss lady
Nikki - evil, fundamentalist, cornered, conflicted, lonely
Margene - hippy, growing, cute, bellweather
Roman - creepy, evil, principled, pragmatic
Adeleen - the best character on TV
Wendy - idiot, genius
Joey - sad sack, p-whipped, stand-up
Albie - creepy, evil, wounded, principled
And what to say about Rhonda

Also, I like how the plotlines and beats have you vaccilating between horror at the situations and a grudging admission that in some ways it's happy and fulfilling for the characters.

No Nip/Tuck or the Shield??
I watched all eps of Nip/Tuck until it slipped under my radar this last season. Decent, AAA team, not elite.
The Shield was an oversight, another of my elite shows. Rescue Me has been too, still on the fence this newest season. The fallout between Leary and the Captain is souring me momentarily. If I can find the article, I'll post. But there was tension for a while, and the Captain was definitely not on board with his suicide.

Baby Lee
07-03-2007, 11:40 AM
Case in point on genius writing, this last episode had Bill working himself into a bleeding ulcer trying to fend off one threat, while providing for his family should he fail in fending it off. Taking it all on himself so the family wouldn't be worried.
All the while, the 'fragile' family was just as effectively dealing with another threat without his help or knowledge.
Show ends with him coming back to bask in the thanks for handling 'his' situation, only to get a faceful of the situation they handled for him.

So how is that "John From Cinci" surfing show?? Isnt that the show that killed "Deadwood" ??
I'd say thus far, weird, disjointed, but entertaining.
Absolutely no idea what the end game is, but there are plenty of quirky, funny, moments and memorable lines.

SPOILERS

Story centers on a family of surfing legends. Mitch Yost is the father/grandfather, a new age-y former wunderkind who was rapped out of the game with knee injuries. Cissy is his wife. Their son Butchie is a heroin addicted also former wunderkind who was rapped out of the game by his addictions. He had a kid [Shaunie] a porn star that Mitch and Cissy care for, who is the next big thing. The show starts with John meeting Mitch and telling him 'the end is near.' He's a parrot of sorts, who responds to people by reciting things he's heard recently [or, originally 'there are things I know and things I don't know' refined to 'I don't know Butchie instead' when Butchie tells him when he doesn't know an answer to say 'I don't know Butchie instead' [of saying the original line]]. Shaunie visits a friend of the family who is a cop rapped out of the cope game for reasons not yet reveal, when the cops parrot is found dead in his cage. Shaunie touches the bird and it springs to life. Later Shaunie breaks his neck in a surf tournament and is brain dead, until the cop brings the parrot to the hospital, and brings Shaunie back to life with a kiss from the parrot. Oh, and Mitch has taken to randomly levitating off the ground.

Margine's so different than the others, a little more wild. She's my favorite. Barb just gets on my damn nerves.
If it's such a self serving man law though, I don't know how, besides Nikki, those wives would buy into it, except that they love each other. But I wonder what it would be like to put up with that, the jealousy alone would be horrible I would think.

I think the show does a good job of showing the jealousy, backstabbing, and competition that would go on between women living in the same household trying to gain quality time with one man.

It may be a fantasy to some men, but i dont envy Bill one bit. One woman is hard enough work.

Bingo, I think you have pretty well hit on the main theme of the whole show. The envy shown by the guys, when he introduced two of his wives, does not tell the whole story.
Last season was hilarious watching him trying to satisfy all three of them on a regular basis. He ODed on Viagara.

Ana was looking GOOD in that scene with the kitchen sink. Bootylicious.

Just clicked with me that Alby's fuckbuddy is Robin's cohost on her 'early early early morning show' on HIMYM

I just got hooked a few weeks ago and proceeded to watch all the seasons in a row to catch up. It's a really fascinating show.

I'd like to see Roman and Al Davis in the same room at the same time. I'm not sure they are different people.

Took me a few weeks trying to figure it out before I finally looked it up.

I thought he was a newcomer, and didn't think anything of it, not one iota of 'where have I seen him before.' Then he returned to HIMYM, and I was like 'of course.' Probably a function of his character on HIMYM being one of those bland, fungible, 'local TV handsome white guy' characters that every show that involves the news in any way incorporates. ie, he was designed to be non-memorable.

I had just rewatched the movie, " Thirteen Days," and he reminded me of a pilot from that movie. Turns out he wasn't the guy I was thinking of, but actually was in that movie.

It sucked. A season's worth of stuff packed in one episode never works well.

I agree, It is just way too much. I mean seriously just how many things to get their selves outed can the do all at once. And when is Barb going to slip up and have an affair with the Indian guy? They are certainly working on ( excuse the expression) laying the groundwork for that.

I did like the peeks into WHY this faith might appeal/appear true to them, ie, the effect of Adaleen's 'pregnancy' on Nicky and the effect of Bill offering himself in sacrifice to the Greenes.

And who can't love lines like Nicky's "Don't leave me here with Mrs. Petrovik!"

I'm intrigued by this season, actually. I like what they are doing between the evangelicals and mormons, that interests me. I also just which Margine would freaking leave or have a threeway with Anna and the dude she married. DAMN IT! I feel like with all these wives, and I've said this before...at some point there HAS to be some boundaries crossed, am I right?

I am a little disappointed that this show took such a hit from the writers strike, you could tell that last season things just weren't the same

I hope they wrap it up good because I do love this show

I'm ready to stop watching HBO series, based on the fact they have no idea on how to wrap them up, Sopranos horrible ending and now this one for Big Love, I'm out.

I didnt mind the ending. Anytime they do something i dont expect, i am pretty ok with it. I thought he would end up with Juniper Creek, but he didnt.

How i see it, is Bill set his family free. Them all together everyone was miserable. EVERYONE. Now they can all move on with their lives. I am ok with that.
