View Full Version : Military Experiences: How Many Planet Members Have Served?
Mr. Kotter

I know we've done it before, but the place has changed quite a bit over the past six months....
How many have served in the Armed forces, either Active Duty or Reserves? And for how long?

Good times had by all.
I was just a farm boy with good conservative values - God, guns, & country - parents had always voted conservative dem or repub - they voted for Goldwater...
...by the time I left I was convinced God was dead, guns were for shooting deer or pheasants, and the country had lied to all of us.
Since, I have made my peace with God, still think guns are over-rated, and believe the current batch of neo-cons are right out of the Johnson/Nixon mold - Messianic egotists that believe we have the duty to change the world in our image - and will lie, cheat, and steal to get there.

4 years in the Air Force, made E-4. Pretty standard stuff.
Of course, those in the Army and Marines (especially the Marines) will argue that the Air Force isn't really the military.

Deployed 3 times and it looks like going back to Iraq in Jan of 07 (at least that's the word I got last week) unless I decide to drop retirement paperwork in September.
Undecided at this point, if I can wait until June to go, will likely go again, if I can't delay it 6 months, I would miss my daughters senior year of hoops, track, and graduation and it isn't worth that to me.

I was || <--- this close to joing USMC in 1988, straight out of high school. What stopped me? Heh, hot girlfriend.
We broke up in '93. Thought about joining then, but chose JuCo instead. Pulled a 4.0 for two semesters, got a full ride, got a job, then a career.... so no USMC. Sometimes I wish I could go back to '88 and join up... instead of spending those years on a hot gf and playing in bands and being a general nuisance to society (oi oi oi!), see the world and be part of a badass brotherhood.
Heh, too late now... out of shape, with a career, wife & kids, the days of kicking ass and banging strange poon are over. :D

We had jarheads on my ship for security (nuclear ships need it) and I can attest that they were some crazy bad-asses. My job involved moving cash around the ship, some times as much as 15 million cash, and we had the marines provide security for the movements. One day while moving cash we were going up a ladder while the XO was coming down. He really wasn't paying attention until the marine pointed his shotgun at him and told him to make a hole. I've never seen a Captain move so fast in his life. They take their job seriously, loved those guys. If you ever need to be in a firefight, find a marine and attach yourself to his hip pocket.

hehe, yep. My senior year I hung out at the recruiting office from time to time, talking shit with the recruiters and various Marines who passed thru. We'd go play "Marine Basketball" at the Y... that was a crazy rough game! It literally was "no blood, no foul". :D
I had to wait 6 weeks after graduation before I could join up (graduated at 17). If not for that wait, I very well could have been one of those guys pulling security.
heh, I remember doing the physical tests when first starting the recruitment process... did 28 consecutive pullups before the recruiter said "uh, that'll do, kid... I think you proved your point" :D
I was joining up with two buddies. One also dropped out of the recruitment process @ MEPS! Heh, he was right there - where you sign your life away and decided "nah, think I'll pass". The other friend went in before us... smashed his leg up pretty badly at boot.

My brother was a sniper in the Marine Corp. towards the end of Vietnam. He's trained me very well. I will serve my duty when the terrorist that are in the U.S. show their faces. That's one advantage the United States has is that we are able to own and bear arms. We can go to our back yards and practice unlimited. I wish I had joined the military at the age of 20 but in some regards glad I didn't.
I tip my hat to ALL of you that have served in the past and present. Thank You very , very much for what you have given me. My Freedom.

The wake up call for me was the fabricated "incident" to keep himself from being convicted. I can't speak about any other president's behavior, but this one I witnessed first hand. Decided right then and there that I didn't want to be made used as a political tool by a tool.

Haven't served, and I probably won't ever serve. ROTC seems like a great thing to do, but you have to have top grades to get into that. There's a small upheaval now about getting the ROTC off the UNI campus.
Other than that, seems like only the kids who can't get into good colleges or haven't found themselves yet are the ones going into the military now.
One kid in my graduating class (out of 69 kids) is going to military. Air Force. He took a test, and they want him to be learn a language, and be a spy.

19 years in the U.S. Navy. Getting ready to retire in Jan 2007 as a Chief Petty Officer :thailor: . Guess I'll have to decide what I want to be when I grow up :hmmm:, maybe a full time beer drinker???? :BLVD:
Thanks to all the Planeteers that have served with pride, and the families that have supported them!
Thank YOU. And welcome to the Planet, despite your misguided taste for college athletics. ;)

Was on alert for Panama but didn't have to go. Did go over and play in the world's largest kitty litter box in 1990-91. Almost got sent to Bosnia.
Made E-7 in 9 years and was up for E-8 when the Army made me an offer I could refuse. But, it was a lot of fun while it lasted.
The Panamanians put up more of a fight than the Iraqis did. Too bad you missed Panama. Which of the beaches were you at in the Gulf?

Spent 5 months at King Fahd International Airport//FOB Bastogne (An Nasyriah).
Spent 2 months just outside of Rafah when we did the big west end-run on the Iraqis.
Spent 27 glorious days at As Saman Airfield, Iraq . . . was getting ready to jump into Talil Airfield with 2nd BDE/101st when they called the war off.
Spent my last month back at King Fahd trying to clean everything under the sun so we could get USDA to let us bring all our gear back into the states.
Basically 7 months of boredom, 3 days of excitement and another month and a half waiting to go home.
Nothing really exciting to write home about. Don't think I saw a single Iraqi the whole time I was there. Although, we did have a Bedouin drive a herd of goats through our camp while we were up in Iraq. Traded him two cases of MREs and a case of 7-up for 4 goats.

Sadly, I wasn't allowed to serve. Numerous family have, and I've always made certain I say "Thank You" whenever I meet a vet. I've always been a bit down about it as military history has been a passion of mine for decades.
Thanks to all vets here. You are a large part of what makes this nation great.

4 years in the Navy.
I had 3 years of high school ROTC, so I went in as an E-3.
Got busted midway through my 4 years for assualting a PO.
I did my full time in, and got out with an honorable discharge, but I was still an E-3 when I got out.
