Literally, wtf does it mean?

I understand happy New Years or Merry Xmas. But happy easter?

Wishing you good tidings on the day that observes the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

That's pretty much what I take from it...

Happy Easter.....to me, it's just "have a great Easter weekend;" though I suppose some might read something about the rebirth, or regeneration into it.

So why not happy 4th of July, Columbus Day, Presidents day, etc?

Why does easter deserve its own special greeting.

Oh pish. I never mention that wonderful place because I think everyone is really silly.

But I'll take the blame for any other kind of self promotion.

Why is it Merry Christmas instead of Happy Christmas?

And why is Valentine's Day always friggin' happy?

Saulbadguy

It means have a good day.

And why is Valentine's Day always friggin' happy?

Because not everyone goes around feeling sorry for themselves.

This reminds me of the "Happy Holidays" debates during Christmas time. People got all riled up just because you'd say "Happy Holidays" to them.

If you want the serious answer, I think I can take a cut at it...

It has to do with Christian teachings and the idea that while the crucifixion of Christ, physically wasn't a good thing for him, it is something that as sinning human beings, we are happy about, because his death signifies to Christians, salvation and an opportunity at eternal life.

They're happy about that.
