How functional are webcams? Are they expensive to operate? What kind of system requirements do they have for decent interactivity?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks

No they aren't expensive. I use to have one but moved and got rid of it. If you get a decent one they are pretty good.

Ditto that; mine is old and the picture is grainy, but it serves the purpose.

Just depends on the quality you want. If you just want it for fun, buy a cheap one. If you need it for business. buy one of the $70 and up ones.

I would go with Logitec either way though.

If I remember right ours was Logitec and I think my dad still uses his all the time.

I bought 3 Logitechs for Christmas ... for us and the sets of grandparents. I spent about $75 a piece on them and we all use them with the MSN IM chat feature.

It works pretty well and serves the purpose of allowing the grandparents to see the kids every couple of days since they're all out of state.

Almost $80 on the site, but you can search around for better pricing.

What type of web connection do you need to make one work?

If I remember right we had plan dial-up when we first had a webcam and it worked just fine, now my parents use DSL I think.

We use a Sony Digital Handycam DCR-TR7000. Bought it to record the kids and family crap. It is hooked up to the computer via an S-video connection. If you go that route you better have a high speed connection.

If I can't access a high speed connection, I typically avoid the Internet. I'm spoiled.
