With the popularity of text messaging exploding as a quick and easy way of communicating on-the-go, Sprint (NYSE: S) is providing its customers more ways than ever to use text services. Customers can now reach out to more friends and family than ever with the latest update - Text to Landline. Text to Landline lets customers send text messages to any landline phone in the United States, where they will then be converted to a voice message for the recipient.

"With Text to Landline, Sprint customers can quickly touch base with someone on a landline phone, even when a voice call might not be convenient," said John Styers, director of product marketing for messaging and imaging, Sprint. "As more and more people begin to rely on text, IM and chat services for quick communication, this offering is just one more way that Sprint is making sure our customers have a wide range of options to meet all their messaging needs."

Text to Landline is available now to all Sprint customers with two-way text-messaging-capable phones. To use, customers simply enter a 10-digit landline phone number and type a message, just as they would when sending a regular text message. The recipient's phone will ring, and when answered, the text message will be automatically read to them. Recipients can reply with a preset text message response or by recording a voice response. Standard text-messaging rates apply.

Text to Landline is one of the many messaging services currently available to Sprint customers. Other available services include:

International text messaging: Customers can now enjoy quick, simple communication with friends and family who are outside the United States - at standard domestic rates for a limited time. Text messages can be sent to and received from more than 60 countries, including Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, China and others.

Voice SMS: With SMS Voice Messaging, customers can easily send voice messages to other wireless phones or email addresses without actually making a phone call. Received voice messages remain in your inbox and can quickly be found and listened to at will. Voice SMS is available on select phones at standard text-messaging rates.

Text Alerts: With text alerts, customers can stay up to date on the latest news, sports, business, and entertainment information. Customers can sign up on their phone or online to receive text messages in their areas of interest, such as a daily joke or daily stock quotes. Standard text-messaging rates apply.

Sprint PCS Telecard: Voice card messages let customers have a little fun sending birthday greetings, wake-up calls, celebrity impressions and more to friends around the country. To access, customers should go to the Web on their Sprint PCS Vision or Sprint Power Vision phone, select Messaging, then Greetings, then choose a category. Telecard greetings are $2.50 per greeting.

Mobile Chat Communities: Communities centered around specific topics bring together users with similar interests. Sprint offers chat communities such as Sports, World Chat, dating services and more. To access, customers should go to the Web on their Sprint PCS Vision or Sprint Power Vision phone, select Messaging, then Chat & Dating, then select a service. Prices range from $2.99 to $5 per month.

Instant Messaging: Select Sprint phones offer quick access to customers' favorite instant-messaging services from AOL, MSN and Yahoo! Customers can view their contact lists, see who's online and send messages no matter where they are using their favorite IM provider. Instant messaging services are $2.99 per month.

I just tried it because I have Sprint. It works. It's kind of cool, I'll probably just use it to screw with my friends/family.

I can't wait to see the first time a domestic violence case is started by a guy texting his wife to get him a beer while he is still sitting on the couch.

The bad news is that most text messaging (SMS) systems today use SMTP gateways for intermediary messaging.

I always love it when text messages are delivered 12 hours after I send them...

I used it to fake up a message to a friend of mine who was visiting. Worked pretty well, but you have to push #1 to get the message to play. I did then turned it over to speakerphone and made one of those WTF? faces. Good stuff.
