I got invited to a dog and pony show from SUN yesterday because we're looking at moving to Solaris 10 for our middleware/EAI OS (from windows). We had been thinking all along about their AMD based Galaxy offerings, but we really went into detail on the T1 chip and I was pretty damn impressed. 1 chip - 8 sockets, each performing true thread parrellelism of 4 computation threads, all of which looks and acts like 32 CPUs. We still may end up going with AMD, but SUN has a real winner on their hands with this chip.

I was equally impressed with their 'zones/containers' solution for running virtual machines on the same box. I believe we'll be able to reduce our number of servers to a 3rd of the current number and at the same time more than double our overall load capacity when we move to the new boxes and Solaris.

Sun makes badass servers.
