Former Jayhawks ink free agent contracts

J-W Staff Reports

Posted Sunday, April 30, 2006

None of the former Kansas University football players (Charles Gordon, Charleton Keith, Nick Reid) who were considered pontential NFL draft picks were selected in this weekend's seven-round, 255-pick draft. But all three Jayhawks had agreed to free agent contracts Sunday evening.

Reid, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, might get a chance to play right down the road as he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, while Gordon inked with the Minnesota Vikings, and Ketih latched on with the Cleveland Browns.

Kenny Zuckerman, Gordonís agent, told the Journal-World that the junior cornerback/receiver/ punt returner was disappointed about not getting picked up during the draft, but said if he had to do it all over again -- that he would.

"With what he knows today, I still think he'd come out and give it a shot at the next level," Zuckerman said.

Reid and Kane were monsterous LBs for KU in '05. I'm glad to see Reid on my NFL team :)

He's a "high motor" player. I don't know how his game will translate to the next level, obviously most teams didn't expect much, but I'll be pulling for him.

Okay, really take off your black and gold or your ugly ass purple glasses for a minute and come back to reality. Nick Reid was the Big 12 Defensive Player Of The Year. And defense was not KU's problem last year. Offense was the issue, mainly with the QBs.

Bowl Games in the past 3 years:
KU - 2
KSU - 1

2005:

Kansas allowed 308.6 yards per game and 22.8 points per game.

Kansas State allowed 359.5 yards per game and 27.7 points per game.

That's 50 yards and 5 points per game difference. Take that, Wildpussy fan.

No one is expecting him to come in and be Ray Lewis, the guy simply has a motor, is a sure tackler and was the Big 12 defensive player of the year - he'll be more than servicable on special teams.

I would have liked to have gotten at least Keith.

BTW, don't blame Gordon's agent for him leaving early. Might want to look at the way he was used and his frustrations as to why he did go - no agent is going to hype a kid into believing that. He could gauge that pretty easily himself by the number of teams wanting to work him out and when the coaches talked to him during the course of the spring.

We got the worst prospect of the KU players.

Gordon has some real potential if he could stay on one side of the ball.
Being an All-American as a sophomore means a lot, then Mangina had to screw with him in an attempt to save his own job.

And Keith has pass-rush abilities, despite his size. But going to CLE is a good move, since they play the 3-4.

Reid is just another white-boy MLB.

More likely to tear Croyle's ACL in training camp. Yeah, I could see that happening.

Croyle's like Bill Brasky.

He'll nail a piece piano wire into his knee with a hammer and be in the huddle on the next series.

He does? When have you seen him play?
against KSUck and the bowl game. KSUck had minus rushing yards that game.

From the his KU workout - (6-2 5/8, 234) was timed at 4.73 and 4.72 in the 40. He had a 40-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-6 long jump, a 4.42 short shuttle, a 7.28 three-cone drill and 23 benches.

His numbers aren't bad.

Iowa's top linebacker numbers for comparison -
Chad Greenway (6-2 3/8, 240) ran his 40s in 4.58 and 4.62 seconds. He strained his left hamstring, so he didn't run the shuttles. He also had a 38-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot broad jump and 19 bench presses.
Abdul Hodge (6-0 3/8, 233) ran his 40s in 4.69 and 4.66 seconds. He also had 25 bench presses. In the other tests, he stood on his Combine performances.

I saw him come within an inch of knocking Allan Evridge's head completley off his shoulders. Of course the play had been over for about 26 seconds. But details are overrated.

I saw him play a few other times. He's a solid player. Hopefully he'll contribute on special teams. He's an UDFA. Any contribution would be a huge plus.
The play is over when Nick Reid SAYS it's over.

I don't think he's that big.

Maybe it's the Peter Pan impersonation that makes him look so.....lithe.
KU had him listed at 6' 4" and 230. So he may be light and slow. If he plays fast that's all that matters. I just know he was a great player and a good pickup. Now if they can get Cory Ross from Nebraska... ah he probably signed with someone today already. :(
