The star running back, who was injured in October, has not been medically cleared to return to the field and won't participate in Chiefs' mini-camp, coach Herm Edwards said Wednesday, according to The Kansas City Star.

"I told him, 'Hey, when you get cleared, when you get ready in your mind to get back here, you need to be back here,' " Edwards told the paper.

"So there's no pressure on him by our people, by us, at all."

Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson said last month he is counting Priest Holmes "in" for next season, as the three-time Pro Bowl running back continues to recover from midseason surgery for head and neck trauma.

Holmes, who was injured last October against San Diego, has continued to work out at his home in Texas, just as he has the past three offseasons.

Larry Johnson emerged as one of the NFL's brightest young stars after Holmes' injury. He rushed for more than 100 yards in each of his nine starts, racking up 1,750 yards and scoring 20 touchdowns. It was enough that one of Edwards' first moves with the Chiefs was to name Johnson the starting running back entering fall camp.

"Priest knows that," Edwards said last month. "Everybody knows that."

But Edwards also noted that many of Johnson's yards came as he simply ran over defenders, a tactic that might wear him down over a full season.

That's why Edwards is eagerly awaiting Holmes' decision. The Chiefs have signed former Denver Broncos running back Quentin Griffin, but have very little depth beyond that. They also lost Tony Richardson, one of the best blocking fullbacks in the league, to free agency.

I think if Priest were going to sit, we'd have heard about it by now. Just how often is Priest overly active in pre-season stuff? He misses all kinds of stuff and still comes out and does better than 28-30 of the other teams RBs. And this year he's our Back Up!

Man, back in the Marty days when we used to do the Running Back by Commitee, is was because none of the backs were all that great. Now we are back to RRbC but its because we have two of the top 5-6 backs in the NFL on our roster at the same time.

Priest usually works out like Jerry Rice this time of year, something he's apparently not doing this year...

When he's healthy. When he was re-habing from the hip injury, I believe it was pretty quite on him as well.

Actually, the summer he was rehabbing his hip, he was releasing workout videos on his website of doing crazy shit like pulling a tractor or something...

To up his contract price.:)
(And they were released a bit later in the year than this.)

Don't worry Htis, if Priest can't go, we'll still have Griffen to backup LJ.:):)

Priest Holmes...over 4 years...was the greatest back in KC history and one of the best of all time...It is a shame if he cannot make another comeback...YOU just gotta love the guy for performance attitude leadership and coolness...He was as exciting as watching some of the greats like Payton...that 70 yarder early last season just before he was hurt where he ran at least 20 yards sideways for the long score epitomized his style and bewildering dominance...
