View Full Version : Biggest Movie Badass

I am working in the office today and have Escape From NY on for company. Anyway, for some reason, I started thinking about movie badasses. So, I came to an important and momentous decision. That decision was to start a wonderful and exciting new thread entitled, "Biggest Movie Badass".

I did a search of threads using the keyword, "badass" and found lots of references, but no threads with the title (truthfully, I did not search throughout all Planet history, just the first 8 pages, or so). So, I assumed that no such thread had been done in the past. (Actually, this should be a poll but, unfortunately, I lack poll-making knowledge, so this will have to do.)

I have to say that the following are some pretty good movie badasses:

Snake Pliskin.
Tony Montana (Scarface).
Rambo.
Chuck Norris (has to be included, of course, but I don't think he rates).
Darth Vadar. (sp?)
Godzilla. (were this a poll, this would be Gazilla)
Wolverine.
Jet Li. (The character in one of the Lethal Weapon movies)
That alien girl in that movie where she grew up really fast.

My choice would be Snake Pliskin. He is truly a memorable and awesome badass. But, I am curious as to your choice for Biggest Movie Badass.

Disclaimer: Sorry if repost. Sorry if stupid post. Sorry if lame post.

How about Dirty Harry? Or Ash from the Evil Dead series.

I also think that Marv from Sin City HAS to get some GIGANTIC props even if the movie wasn't about him. He gets my vote.

You're totally right, Mr. Moooo. I should have thought of all of these.

And Marv was tops in the badass category.

All very true, Mr. Halfcan. But, neither Bruce Lee nor Jet Li could dodge one of Dirty Harry's bullets.

I still say it's pretty difficult to execute your super fancy kung fu with a .44 lodged in your skull, Mr. Halfcan.

As far as dodging gunfire is concerned, maybe Smith gets honorable mention. He was pretty much of a badass.

Geek answers:

Both Darth Vader and Han Solo in the first (original version) Star Wars film. Totally different types of badasses, but badasses nonetheless. And both go up on the badass scale in Empire Strikes back, with DV's nonchalant bitch-slapping of sir whines-a-lot and HS's classic "I know" to Leia's "I love you". Totally badass, that.

Alec Guinness was pretty badass, too.

Darth Vader wins in a one-on-one with Bill "The Butcher" Cutter because of his mind powers and Bill's knives are kind of shortish.

Taken by surprise, though, I think Harry Calahan can handle Vader because Harry is probably immune to Darth's mental force since he's halfway to the dark side already.

The Bride loses to Wolverine because of his mysterious healing power.

Have you seen Sin City? Marv got shot well over 30 times, ran over about 4, and actually took 2 shots of the electric chair in order to finally die! He also jumped through the windshield of a cop car going about 60, and jumped down about 3 stories to a soft landing.

Edited to add: His response after taking the first round of electric chair... "Is that the best ya got, you PANZIES!?!"

Ass kicked?? He f*cking worked Karl in their hand to hand fight and strung his ass up like a gutted deer in Bwana's front yard. Why don't you ask Al Leong (the Chinese guy on the roof) how it felt to kick McClane's ass when McClane's nine was blowing pieces of General Tso's out of his back.

The only guy that can claim to have taken down McClane in H2H is Col. Stewart, and McClane still outsmarted him in the end. Dutch (although he is a bad mo'f*cker) wasn't exactly without luck, he was going to get taken out by a random dude until Carl Weathers saved his ass.

I pretty much agree that Dutch could beat McClain in a tropical forest match because of Dutch's special ops training. But, it would be a lot closer in an urban fight.

Marv could handle either one of them, though. He doesn't quit either and can take a heck of lot more punishment. Still, I think Smith could take Marv due to his speed. He would confound Marv quite a bit, which would give him an advantage.

most of you have probably not heard of this, because it is an Australian flick. Its based on a true story, and this guy is one serious BADASS.
its available on blockbuster online and i assume netflix... this is a must see.

Chopper tells the intense story of Mark "Chopper" Read, a legendary criminal who wrote his autobiography while serving a murder sentence in prison. His book, From the Inside, upon which the film is based, was a best-seller.

I sort of agree with Mr. GoChiefs. I don't see how you can be a true, authentic badass and be so much for truth and justice and stuff, Mr. CHIEF4EVER.

Sure, Superman had awesome powers, but I think badasses shouldn't really care about things like that. And, I don't think they would worry about having an alternate identity. That would be like Larry Johnson eating cooked food or something.

FAX

The secret identity thing is a very good point. A real badass wouldn't care who knows about him. Anyone with a secret identity should automatically be disqualified from consideration.

I'll point out a couple of less obvious candidates. Bugs Bunny. You don't mess with Bugs Bunny, because he'll always get the best of you, and he'll do it without breaking a sweat. That rabbit has ice water flowing through his veins.

And while his attack skills aren't that great, I've never seen anyone take as much damage as Wile E. Coyote, and keep coming back. He's relentless, and he can take everything you throw at him. That goes a long way toward defining badass in my book.

alnorth
05-29-2006, 11:33 AM
By definition, the biggest badass would have to be a good guy, because in the end they always beat the bad guys. This is one of my biggest complaints about movies.

You might want to see "Fallen", starring Denzel Washington and John Goodman.

Its not too much of a spoiler, but its necessary because of the nature of this post: the evil character wins in the end. Its the only movie I remember where evil defeats good at the end of the story, which made it pretty damned unique and interesting. :)

(edit: not counting quasi non-fiction stories that try to recreate murderers, or something vague like some evil regime wins but the audience knows they will be toppled eventually. I'm talking about an evil character that is thoroughly wicked, and gloating about it as the closing credits roll)

No, Star Wars III doesnt count, because evil doesnt win in the end, they only get to sit on the throne for a little while. If that series was only Star Wars 1, 2, and 3 with no intention of making 4, 5, or 6 I doubt they ever would have ended this story this way without reassuring the audience that evil will eventually lose in later movies.

This is a good story. They were best friends as everyone knows (part of the reason this is a question, cause they refused to fight each other). Bruce Lee is asked in an interview over and over and over whether or not he could whoop Norris. Lee, out of frustration finally says, "Sure, I'd whoop his ass, whatever," (not exact quote by far).

After Lee dies, they ask Norris the same question. Being the gentleman he is he says, "Yeah, he would have whooped my ass," (also not an exact quote).

Although much can be said for both considering the circumstances, you could also say both agreed that Lee would win.

Not necessarily, Mr. Chan93lx50 (sp?). As I'm sure you are well aware, the badass nurture, badass nature debate has raged for hundreds of years.

While true that early badasses were mostly born (the Visigoths, Vikings, those mean dwarfs from that island where the good coffee comes from, etc), badasses are also created from their circumstances. Batman, for instance.

But, once made, a true badass stays badass. There's no, "Oh, I'll just wait until I get transported back to Medieval times before turning badass." They either wake up badass, or they don't.

Point, Mr. Tribal Warfare. Point.

Who won the Alien vs. Predator thing, anyway? Did the aliens win?

the answer noone did, because they had to use their fusion bomb and a pred-alien was birthed at the end of the film. The Creeper won't be able to eat acid anyway, and wouldn't be able to handle legions of those bastards too.

Well, not to challenge your logic in any way, Mr. Tribal Warfare, but if the Aliens couldn't defeat the Predators, then it is unclear whether the Aliens are badassier than Predators or not.

That fact, combined with the clear evidence that that amazingly nasty bat guy could take a Predator with no problem whatsoever makes me think he may be badasserer. In a Predator fight, his flight capability would be a huge advantage. Plus, he does not die from impalement through the head, so the Predator's weapons would likely not be effective against him. Alien acid could be a problem, though.

One the basis of tonight's performance, heck on the basis of the last minute of tonight's performance. . . Tommy Gavin.

MarthFocker whatta way to launch the 'cable series' season.
Duct tape to the mouth of the talkative 20-something hottie? In the MIDDLE of Colonel Angus??

Tommy retains a seat on the council.

I nearly hyperventilated laughing at Kenny spitting out the cigar when he saw Tommy. Perfect deadpan.
Then Kenny's temper tantrum when they started riding him for not ponying up his penalty, followed by him announcing he'd already reserved a table, be there at 9, at the club they were talking about going to.

ROFL ROFL

Chink food and birthday cake. Nobody can fight with a spread like that.

ROFL ROFL

That show turns on a dime between hilarious and devastating, that's why it's so addictive.

The bad ass that I like is Clint Eastwood.
Not your typical kung fu, acrobatic, kick the whole crowd's ass type
but, a bad ass none the less.

Maybe not the biggest, but definitely the baddest...

"Follow only if ye be men of valour, for the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived. Bones of full fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth."

Exactly...I giggled about the cigar for a couple minutes afterward...

If there was Chink food and birthday cake at Normandy, war would be over.

I just happened upon it late last night and it really sucked me in. Im anxious to see the next week.

The discussion at the bar about the one guy's mom's rack was INSANE funny.

I think the biggest bad asses in a movie recently were the women in that movie, Sin City. Something about sexy women in leather kicking ass....just screams Bad Ass to me.

I would say Andre the giant.

He's the biggest I can think of.

Not sure how much of a badass he is though....

Oddly, I've somehow missed this thread. :spock:

Not digging through numerous pages, but my first thought was Kurgan from Highlander, so that's my pick.

I think one still has to consider the Jeepers Creepers bat guy. In the second movie, he took an iron bar through the noggin and all it did was make him madder.

I don't think that even the Bride could handle a harpoon head shot with such nonchalance.

A real badass,Audey Murphy.Awarded the Medal of Honor in WWII.Jumped on a burning tank and killed a bunch of German soldiers with the machine gun, thus saving his unit. After the war he starred in "To hell and back",a movie about his life.
Went on to make really bad westerns. As far as a fictional badass,I can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned Jack Bauer yet.
