Reed is a very good, Vet Min Pick up for the Chiefs...Another body for camp at worst, and at best, an improvement to the depth chart on the weakest position on the team.

With Browning approaching and considering retirement(from reports) and Siavii not holding up the expectations....Sims at a do or die point in his contract, and an aging Dalton....It can't hurt anything.

Iowanian

never missed a game in 5 seasons, 58 tackles...6 sacks, while playing as an undersized NT.

I agree that he'd be a better under tackle. I think he'll at least be in the running for a roster spot. In truth, if half of last year's DTs aren't on the team when camp breaks, it would be an upgrade.

I wonder if this means anything for Junior. I think we need to cut our losses with him.

the Talking Can
06-07-2006, 06:43 PM
I don't think Sims and Siavii have 58 tackles in their careers...combined.

He could be a good 3rd or 4th DT. I'm very curious about Edwards (ex-Bills DT).

AND VERY GLAD TO HAVE SOME REAL COMPETITION.

Krumrie don't play that!

Iowanian

I think if Edwards can shake the injury bug, he's solid enough to put Sims into the depth chart.
I really liked his signing too.

I don't think there is a single DT on the Roster who should go into camp feeling assured of a roster spot, let alone playing time.

Maybe someone should go ask the jetfans what they think of him, now that he's gone.

nychief

I have watched him play a lot, he is a lunchpail DT. Nothing more, nothing less....well unless you JR. then you are a lot less.

In his five seasons in the league, Reed has never missed a game. A seventh-round choice in the '01 draft, he has 159 tackles, six sacks, four fumble recoveries and two passes defensed for his career.

This guy sounds better than Bartee.

RE: Reed, sounds like we'll get just what we expect, a motor guy who tries hard, but far from elite athlete to be a play-maker.

What concerns me more are the comment on Herm from that Jets board. My only hope at this point is that his prior OC's in NY, Paul can't Hackett, was the true contributor to the offensive approach, and not Herm himself.

Thoughts:

1. NYJ fans seem to think he was the weak link on their DL. Is this an honest opinion or is it a case of "we will trash and exagerrate shortcomings of a player that leaves a team, especially a guy who goes to Herm." I don't know. From reading this board in the offseason you'd think Al Saunders was only slighly better than Raye and Hackett.

2. If he were any good wouldn't someone else have picked him up for league minimum?

3. Even if he sucks there is a good likelihood he will suck less than some of the current sucky players on the roster.

4. Competition is always good.

Iowanian

I've got dibs on being the first here to steal "Sermon Edwards".

Sounds pretty much like what we thought....a high motor, solid citizen who is competing for a roster spot. If he's a guy who can make the team, and take 20-25 good snaps a game, even in passing situations I think its still a good move.

Hopefully, Krumrie and Gunther move him to the under tackle and he turns into DTackle Jesus.

1) To be fair, the vast majority if people bitching about Saunders here were bitching about him BEFORE he left.

2) Maybe, maybe not. Maybe he wanted to play for Edwards?

3) Very true.

His stats don't look bad from last year for a rotational player. A lot better than the scrub backups we've had, anyway.

Good deal. Now all we need is a capable starter to compliment the capable backup/s.

Well, they were trying to use him as a NT in a 3-4 last season. That doesn't speak very well of Herm, but I wouldn't expect a guy that weighs 290 pounds to succeed in that situation.

What I get from the crap on the Jets board is that Reed might be aguy that can get some penetration in the middle as a pass rusher.

It's difficult to read through the unmitigated moronacy, though.

Yeah I got confused by a thread over at the Jets board. There was a post saying that Reed was screwed as soon as the Jets switched to the 3-4 defense. That combined with all the posts about how Reed couldn't keep blockers off Vilma got some wires twisted in my head.

Dick thought Eric Hicks had some value.
