Was wondering if anyone knew of something off hand.

Also... how much gambling/fooling around money should be taken for a Thursday - Sunday trip?

Not a heavy gambler but I'd probably plan on spending $500 gambling for the entire trip.

This is for 2 people - in early - mid October.
Not really wanting to go over $1500 for entire trip.

What's the best bang for my buck I can get?
Hotels... etc.

My Wife and I usually go to Vegas at least once a year. Been doing that for about 20 years now. As crazy as it sounds, I recommend places like the Riveria (sp) or the Imperial Palace. Saves a boatload of money.

The Imperial Palace is directly across the street from the Mirage and pretty much in the center of the strip.

As a general rule, we never blow more than about a grand - airfare included....

Have a great time!!

Do I have to stay in one of those hotels on the strip to enjoy the mood or save more $ for other things by going elsewhere (say, something nice 2 or so blocks from the strip)?

Stay on the strip. If you do your homework you'll get a great hotel on the cheap.

Don't stay at the Stratosphere, it sucks. Did that one year during Comdex, didn't realize the conference was going on but it was the only hotel that wasn't $250 a night.

There's no reason to go if you don't stay on the Strip, IMO. You'll spend a ton of money (and time) sitting in a cab to go to the Hotels on the strip. You'll be better off picking a great hotel with restaurants that you'll enjoy. I'd recommend the Venetian (great hotel with plenty of good restaurants and shops, plus a good pool), Mandalay Bay (House of Blues, good restaurants, a wave pool and beach) and the Flamgino. The Flamingo's pretty much smack dab in the middle and there's a great "cheap" place right next door, as well as a cool nightclub in Drai's.

Have fun!

Do you mean as in great cheap hotel or brothel?
If it's the latter... I'm married.

I'm seeing nothing less than $1000 for flight and hotel. I'm thinking maybe a cruise would be more bang for the buck than Vegas.

No, I meant cheap tables. Like $3 and $5 dollar tables. O'Shea's is the name of the joint. You'll pay a minimum of $10 dollars to play Blackjack and more for other tables on the strip. If you don't have a lot of dough to play, check out O'Shea's or go downtown.

Dane McCloud does not use nor does he endorse the use of brothels.

Dude, with airfare as it is, it's gonna be tough to fly anywhere for under $800 for two people. Call a travel agent if you can't find a package online.

Soutwest Vacations packages available online usually are a cheap alternative. Especially if you aren't that picky about where you stay.

Yeah, on a whim I checked SWA and the cheapest I would be able to reserve tickets in October (round Trip) was $681 for two people....

Damn! Prices have sure gone up!! Hate to do it, but I thiunk we'll be driving next time...

Download Ding! from www.southwest.com (http://www.southwest.com/). Its a small app that runs in your system tray and notifies you of special airfares. I see flights from Kansas City to Las Vegas for $44-$59 one way all the time on there.

If you find a good price for a hotel, book it now. But book directly with the hotel so you can cancel anytime if you need. If you book it through travelocity or some similar site, you're stuck if you decide to cancel.

Right now, you can get the Flamingo Oct. 5-8 (three nights) for $479. Add approx. $200 for airfare, and that's not a bad deal for center-strip on a weekend.

Again, your best bet is to go ahead and lock in a good hotel rate now and then keep an eye out for a cheap airfare.

The same dates through SWA Vacations for the Flamingo is $980 right now.

You know what? My wife and I did that a few years ago. Got our hotel stay for three nights paid. Surprisingly, they didn't hard sell us too much on the timeshare and took us back to the hotel. It only took 3 hours total out of our day. I'm sure this is exremely rare though.

Excaliber is usually a good deal. I went to Vegas for 10 days and spent 1500 - and I bought nice gifts for family members and went out for entertainment and ate like a hog and gambled the whole time. You can surely do that for what you want spend.

You should also go to as many hotel/casino web sites as you can and sign up for their player's club online. You will start getting special room rates via email soon after.

Heh! I got a wild hair when I was down there last week and put down $20 on the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl at 25/1. Likely pissed away $20, but if I hit it, I get back $520. Oh well, I did well on the black jack tables so I will still be way up from that trip.

Funny this should be brought up, I just got an email from a friend saying that you can fly out from KC on Southwest for $79 there $59 back if you buy before June 26. Stay at a cheaper hotel and the whole deal will cost you around $300 a person. Well worth a weekend in Vegas IMO. (I'm not counting how much you'll lose at the craps table)

I'm curious too. I checked prices on SWA earlier and it's $160 each way right now. I'm a Rapid Rewards member, subscribe to email updates and (as previously mentioned) have the Ding! app on my PC and I haven't seen anything at all on this special.

Wutamess, please install the Ding! app on your PC and be patient. I almost guarantee you'll see airfare for $59 or less within a couple of weeks.

Just last week I saw it for $44 each way through the end of October. When you get an alert from Ding! you usually only have a few hours to book at that price. Meanwhile, start looking into booking your rooms so you'll know what dates to fly when a special is available. Most hotels will allow you to cancel your reservation (or rebook at a lower price) without penalty. Check with each one for their cancellation policy.

Are you planning to rent a car there or use public transportation?

Well public transportation and walking would let me enjoy the entire experience. Unless I need a car to go off strip for some (unthinkable) reason.

I would have to say stay at the Imperial Palace or Flamingo, or maybe even the Frontier. These hotels tend to be cheap, and right in the middle of everything. The IP and Flamingo are right across from Ceasars and Mirage, and Frontier ir right across from The Wynn and Treasure Island.

If you want to be a little off-strip, but still not to far, try the Tuscany Suites. They are usually cheap and about a mile or so from the strip.

There is Hooters Hotel as well. They are very cheap (No pun intended) and very close to the MGM and what not.

And when it comes down to it, you can almost stay anywhere and get around easily becasue of the Monorail, which begins at the MGM and ends at the Hilton.

good Luck :)

In that case, you should try to book something mid-strip. Anywhere in that area gives you plenty to see and do within walking distance.

Look at Flamingo, Harrahs, *Imperial Palace, Bally's, Paris, Caesars Palace, Barbary Coast, or even Bellagio. I'm not sure what your budget is. You also might look into the Aladdin (soon to become Planet Hollywood). They are doing a lot of construction there, so room rates may be lower than normal.

If you have a Total Rewards card from Harrah's KC, call them up and see what specials they have for mermbers. Harrahs now owns Caesars, Bally's, Imperial Palace, Flamingo and Paris, so they might be able to get you a good deal.

*Some people think the IP is a dump. I've been there twice and it's great for a low-roller like me.

PS - You don't need a car just take Taxis or walk

Not wanting to go over $1500 entire trip.
Low airfare will be go a long way in not knocking too much out of that.
I expect to be there Oct 5-8th and plan on using $500 or so for gambling. Since everyone is suggesting the Flamingo I'll probably stay there.

Lots of great shows, including The Price is Right at Ballys.

You get to play the game, and possibly win prizes. It's pretty cool and only $35

Was trying to go around my birthday time (Oct 3rd 30th). Wouldn't be opposed to going during the week. What kind of action are you talking about? Vegas is ALWAYS hopping. If going during the week is an option, then I would seriously consider it. Flamingo for Oct. 2-5 (3 nights) is $327 inc. tax. Saves you $150 over the weekend rate.

EDIT: If you have a Harrah's Total Rewards card you save $10 per night. If you've been to Harrah's in KC, then you have a card. Also, if your into the pool scene, the Flamingo pool is considered one of the best in Vegas.

BTW, If it seems like I'm getting into this a little to much, it's because I am. The wife and I usually make it out to Vegas once a year, we love it so much. We won't be going this year, so I'm getting my Vegas fix by helping you plan yours. :D

If you're really budget minded, you can book a room for three nights (weekday) for less than $200. Circus Circus, Frontier and Sahara all have rates of around $50-65 per night. Most of these properties have rooms that are a bit worn, but clean. I've only stayed at the Sahara, and there is nothing wrong with the property. Some people might tell you otherwise, but honestly, the rooms are on par with a Best Western or Motel 6 or such.

As far as Airfare, you are actually looking to book too far in advance. I know, it doesn't make sense to me either, but if you wait a month or two you WILL find a sail. ( Most likely thru southwest).

I have a trip planned at the end of july. What I wanted to do was fly from KC to Vegas to San Diego to KC. I was looking in April and Airfare was killing me looking at over $850+ for 2 people. Finally changed plans to go KC to SD, drive to vegas, drive back to SD, fly back to KC. Airfare on Midwest came to $500 and rental car to $220. Rental could have been cheaper but that got me a Caddilac CTS for 9 days and I was going to need a rental in SD with the original plan too.

Long story short is, I've had DING installed since I booked this in april and have seen numerous sales on southwest that could of gotten my original plan for ~$400 + $60-$70 rental. Not to mention that my cousin a his wife decided to join us and got tickets from KC-Vegas rt for $140 per person LAST WEEK.

Follow the suggestion of booking the hotel first and wait on the airfare. My problem was I purchased $300 worth of non-refundable show tickets.

We're staying at the Alladin Sun - Thurs for $250. I found that deal(now ended) from the Fatwallet thread below.

You and Dartgod are "the SHIT"!
I knew I'd be able to find what I was looking for on Sin City through here.

Looks like if I catch everything just right I may be able to have flight and hotel for around $600 for the entire trip (with free shows and buffets thrown in).

More money to waste gambling.
May even talk the wife into participating at the bunny ranch with me.
I'll use the motto... what happens in vegas... stays in vegas.
Of course, she'll be down and my broke as wouldn't have the funds. ;)

Oh, I just want to emphasize one more time. Book directly with the hotel if at all possible. If you book with a travel site, you have to pay in advance and it is usually not refundable (unless you purchase an additional "trip insurance"). Most hotels will price match any specials you find out there anyway.

Also, you can apply any comps you earn against the room bill as well. If you think you are too "low roller" to earn comps, think again. Sign up for a players card when you get to the hotel and then use it anytime you gamble there. It may just be a few dollars, but every little bit counts and you may also earn good room offers in the future, especially if you are primarily a slot player.
