Anyone have a clue as to which Chiefs might have shown up at the Widespread Panic concert this past Wednesday? The band has a blog over on myspace where they mentioned some players showed up backstage for their show.

Day 2: Starlight Amphitheater, Kansas City

The first day of tour; new faces on the crew all around. All of our sound guys from Eighth Day are crispy from providing PA at Bonnaroo. Candace has her lighting team together and we have a new bus driver named Tom. Yogi, who trained us in bus etiquette, and has looked after us for nearly fourteen years, was unable to make this tour. We take our bus drivers very seriously and there have only been two who ever really cared for us as much as we cared for them: Yogi and JR. Tom seems nice though, we'll see how he handles driving through hurricane alley after tonights show.

Soundcheck...jam...dinner...lots of surprise friends show up. Our fellow Athenians The Drive By Truckers come down to hang out and party for a day off of their tour with The Black Crowes. Seeing some hometown faces always sets one at ease when it seems like you are so far from home. Also some members of the Kansas City Chiefs show up. Interesting conversations there for sure...too bad I have to be onstage.

The show is good...the crowd is better. So supportive and enthusiastic it helps us get off to a good start. There are some highs and lows with John Keane added to the mix for this tour. Some ducking and dodging and some brilliant corners. The crowd is behind us 100 percent. The first set is wiggly and furious...kinda sloppy too, but fun.

Once the sun goes down things cool off and Candace's light show envelops the stage and pulls the audience into our mood. Second Skin works out really well and leads to some new areas of jamming. There it is finally: that tour feeling. Thoughts of home and dogs linger, but it's too late now. We are caught up in it already. Its going to be a long summer. And most likely a fun summer.

The bus rides west across Kansas as the rain pelts the windshield and lightning slices unevenly across the sky. Tomorrow: Denver and Red Rocks.

A friend of mine who was at the show said he spotted three players and he thought two of the three were Derrick Johnson and Tim Grunhard. He said he didn't recognize the third, but that he was "some other black guy"
