NEW YORK -- DaimlerChrysler AG plans to launch its money-losing Smart brand in the U.S. in 2008 and will partner with an American distributor -- United Auto Group Inc. -- to sell its tiny Smart ForTwo model in about half a dozen areas of the country, a top company executive said Wednesday.
Ulrich Walker, president of the company's Smart brand, added that rising fuel prices should boost sales of the car, which will get about 40 miles per gallon and sell for less than $15,000. But in a sign of the company's caution, Mr. Walker ...

This 9ft long two seater car is supposed to get over 40mpg in town and almost 70mpg on the highway.

And as soon as you hit a curb, the driver and passenger both die.

If you're too stupid to avoid a curb, then you deserve to die.

OK, that's a little harsh, but Damnit Carl, bad drivers piss me off.

They must be doing something to make it comply with our domestic requirements. They had previously said they would not import this car due to our safety and environmental laws IIRC.

I also recall the safety issue, not the environmental one though.

I may be wrong, but it seems I read something needed to be done to meet U.S. emissions quite a while back. I spent a short time looking for an article with no luck.

The one in Europe gets 60mpg according to the above article and the U.S. version gets 40. That could be do to some of the mods I guess, or very heavy air bags.

I'm not so sure. I'm getting pretty damn tired of paying $300 a month in gas. Hell, that's almost a car payment......

It's been a huge flop in europe... american consumers want room, and the ability to move stuff... at most this is a niche market, maybe 10,000 a year

And D/C is the company that’d do it. Remember how they introduced the new VW Bug to the market?

exactly

if they can get girls to want the smart car as their 1st car/sweet sixteen car etc ... it could do quite well.

know your market and play to it

they need to pay heavy attention to the colors available and simplifying the maintenance.

little things like vanity mirror and cup holders could have a huge impact too.

KC area drivers crack me up talking about the Grandview Triangle. It's nothing compared to Spagetti Junction. Ours is bigger than yours!

DT

It looks much more impressive from ground level though:

Probably about the same as any other car that takes on something 50 times it's size.

That's pretty good...but the all time worst is the 'Mixing Bowl' in DC. A decade of construction later and it still sucks.

I read these 'smart' cars are 700cc 3 cylinder engines...I bet they struggle at 80mph. What bunch of crap. Didnt they learn in the 70's about small/crappy cars? Back then gas was even 'higher' than today in real dollars.

I wouldn't count on it. What's that, the crossroads of two interstates?

GVT has 3 interstate spurs converging, Hwy 71 passing through the middle of it all, Major Blvds Bannister and Red Bridge to transition for within a mile of the 'triangle,' and the natural imediment of the bluff to the SW of the 'triangle.'

With the turbo version push’n a scream’n 61 hp, and though the article I read doesn’t say I’d doubt it’s make’n even 100 lb/ft of torque, yea it’s not gonna be run’n 9’s at the local strip or anything.

But you could easily by attatching some handy dandy stickers that say NOS, K&N, and VTEC.

Add a big ass wing to the back and you'll somoke the competition. :)

Don’t forget the “fart can” exhaust.
Gotta make it as annoyingly loud as possible.
