View Full Version : Interesting info from one of the world's largest Internet backbone providers...

Current transport traffic level is roughly 2 petabytes PER DAY. 2 petabytes = 2,000,000 kilobytes = roughly 16M kilobits (the average home DSL connection is 256 kilobits)

The current traffic level is growing at a rate of approximately 5% every MONTH.

Roughly HALF of that 2 petabytes of traffic is peer-to-peer networking like Kazaa, BitTorrent, etc.

In May, they logged 1.3 BILLION minutes of VoIP, commercial and residential, and that doesn't include calls that didn't originate or terminate on the provider network (do-it-yourself, Vonage, etc.).

2 petabytes

A petabyte? Cool, that's a new word for me.

Although it sounds horribly like what a dirty uncle would do.

Here's another little factoid, just to put it all in perspective:

If you took all of the books in print today and combined them together, they would equal roughly ONE PETABYTE.

Seriously, I'd like to see this.

I don't have a link.

I have insider information.

Mr. htismaqe is providing some excellent information here. Thank you, Mr. htismaqe.

I would just like to add that, according to the Chiefs' official web site, 400 petabytes equals Larry Johnson's sperm count.

I'm gonna hijack my own thread here, I've never had one of my threads get moved to DC.

Looking at those stats, I think it's obvious who will be targetted if regulations protecting net neutrality are not put into place.

My sentiments exactly, Mr. ExtremeChief.

But, I don't think we have to worry. Their popularity has kind of peta-ed out.

That's clearly who should be targeted.

Whether or not that's who will be targeted I think isn't as clear.

I still think, that left to a completely free market, whoever has the most $$$ will determine the content.

(Just doin' my best to get this moved to DC for ya. ;))

I'm not sure who you THOUGHT I was talking about, but look at the peer-to-peer traffic levels again...
