I was watching NFL Total Access last night and Rich Eisen had Rod Woodson and Takeo Spikes give their list of the top 5 running backs in the league.

Rod goes first and says to Takeo, "I know you are going to disagree with the first person on this list (#5, counting down to #1), but I think this guy is a beast and has lots of potential and it's---Larry Johnson.

Takeo has Clinton Portis as his #5 guy, but the rest is the same.

1. LT
2. Shaun Alexander
3. Edgerrin James
4. Tiki Barber
5. Larry Johnson/Clinton Portis

OK, not terribly disrespectful, but Takeo was just basically shaking his head in disbelief and Rod kept saying that it was based primarily on potential.

Then, at the end of the segment, Eisen said, "This may shock the both of you, but I think at the end fo the season we'll be putting LJ near or at the top of this list and I don't think it was a stretch at all."

I just thought it was a little funny how the two players were kind of waffling on LJ and Eisen was sitting there thinking that LJ is easily on this list.

As a follow up to the thread about the ESPN opinion on LJ, I just thought it was interesting to see that the consensus of 'experts' really are still waiting to see if LJ is for real or not.

As a side note (and realizing that this is from a different viewpoint from their discussion) I haven't seen a fantasy football magazine yet that didn't have LJ as it's #1 back.

ESPN Fantasy magazine gave Shaun Alexander the edge over LJ, but LJ is their #2.

My wife was reading the Footballguys mag I had bought, found an article about strength of schedule. They said if you had #1, and your choice of LJ, LT, or SA, that based on the run defense SOS, you should take LT.

Yet the cheat sheet has LJ, then LT, then SA.

We share a FF team, 1 player keeper league. We're in the un-freaking real position of choosing b/n LJ or LT. The decision is made, but not sharing with the league for another month when the choice is due. Several folks are sweating it out. ROFL

Since LJ has really only done it for 9 or so games I can see where they're coming from. Everyone else on that list has produced consistently for years.

As Eisen said, he'll be near the top if his production continues.

ESPN guys are working off history. At this point we have 9 games and though he ran over alot of teams.
He needs a big year this year.

LJ should be running down hill very angry this year to get completely noticed as a premiere back...

His payme date is coming in a few years....

I'm rollin the dice that the last two "half seasons" performance are legit, gonna cost me my 4 year hold on LdT as my franchise player. I feel pretty good about it though.

I don't think that anyone should be upset that your guy hasn't been declared the greatest RB in the NFL.

As previously mentioned, he's in damn good company right now with the likes of LT, Alexander, Edge and Barber... these guys have produced at freaky levels for a solid period of time.

None of them are injured and each of them appears to have every opportunity to continue kicking ass. Same goes for Portis.

LJ's in the top 5... and he's legit, despite not having 16 games in a season as "the guy" on his resume. Soon, he'll have it.... I don't see any disrespect by their comments.

Here's another thought and let me first say that I think LJ is a badass, you just don't do what he did b/c your lucky. There are 2 things that LJ has to prove... 1- he can be a badass consistently for 16 games and 2 - he can do it against all types of defenses, not just the spares.

Here's what LJ did down the stretch in 2005 when he became the starter:

The season ending ranking of the rush defense per team is listed first in ( ) followed by where the game was played.
(#25) @KC | 9 oak (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/rai2005.htm) | 22 107 | 48 | 2 |
(#31) @BUF | 10 buf (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/buf2005.htm) | 27 132 | 46 | 0 |
(#32) @HOU | 11 hou (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/htx2005.htm) | 36 211 | 6 | 2 |
(#8) @KC | 12 nwe (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/nwe2005.htm) | 31 119 | 53 | 1 |
(#2) @KC | 13 den (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/den2005.htm) | 30 140 | 9 | 2
(#15) @DAL| 14 dal (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/dal2005.htm) | 26 143 | 28 | 3 |
(#12) @NYG| 15 nyg (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/nyg2005.htm) | 31 167 | 17 | 2 |
(#1) @KC| 16 sdg (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/sdg2005.htm) | 32 131 | 48 | 2 |
(#20) @CIN| 17 cin (http://www.profootballreference.com/teams/cin2005.htm) | 26 201 | 21 | 3 |

Again, I'm not trying to discredit LJ at all, just merely pointing out why some folks aren't putting him in the #1-3 overall slot just yet.

Out of those 9 games, he played 3 Top 10 rush defenses @ KC. The remaining rush defenses were ranked 12th or worse and 4 were beyond 20th overall.

LJ did what great RBs are supposed to do... tear up poor defenses and kick ass at home.

I don't want him to be "declared" anything.

It will be much more fun to see the pundits falling all over themselves after he PROVES IT.
