The letter is pretty funny. Mostly because the tone of it implies throughout the whole thing that it's supposed to be taken seriously. Of course the premise of the letter, and the fact that it's addressed to Luke, instead of Owen makes it pretty obvious that it's a weird ass joke. One look at these guys' lyrics and it's pretty easy to see why they would find something like this funny...

It would have like, been a lot funnier if it hadn't been written by a like, 13 year old valley girl. Fer shur.

It's tongue in cheek man... It's supposed to sound extremely informal, which is what makes it funny. If it sounded really formal, it would stop being a joke and start being a feud.

But from the looks of things, at least Owen Wilson is playing along...

Owen's response @ CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/28/people.owenwilson.ap/index.html)

"I have never heard the song 'Cousin Dupree' and I don't even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to concentrating on my new movie, 'HEY 19.' "

Interesting... Steely Dan has a website and apparently still tours...

In a statement released by his spokeswoman, Ina Treciokas, Wilson said: "I have never heard the song 'Cousin Dupree' and I don't even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to concentrating on my new movie, 'HEY 19.' "

That's some comedy GOLD right there, ladies and gentlemen.
