View Full Version : Why does Carl sign old players?

I was wondering about this the other day and with the signing of Law, it is even relevant. Over the years Carl has signed a lot of older players who have then retired as a Chief. Is there some financial gain to paying players the larger amounts for being long term veterans?

It's a symptom of being a team always trying to get over the hump.

I figure that he has a choice of only 2 types.... old and young. I am pretty sure I have seen him sign a few young ones from time to time as well. :)

Situational issues again that stem from BAD DRAFTING and injury

Probably cause he has a lot less competition in the bidding...Gawd knows he isn't the best salesmen in the business so he tends to go where he has a chance of success in bringing in players.

He's ever the bargain hunter. It's not that often we bring in big names. We go for the project guys with upside or the veterans past their (compensational) prime that can still contribute.

If you look at the number of project players on our roster, seems like there have always been some key contributors who were those kinds of guys. Then when we bring in someone like Surtain or Law who is a bigger name, we get a long term solution or something very cap-friendly.

I'm not upset that he doesn't get into bidding wars over the best player on the market. I don't think he's cheap or just cares about filling the seats. He tries to stock the roster evenly with talent without having huge amounts of eggs in only a couple of baskets. And we do manage to stay out of cap-hell years like not all that many teams do.

Because all the fans are screaming DAMIT CARL :cuss: We need some help on D! Just sign em up!

Also, Because most of the younger ones are kept by their teams, ie. Franchise tag. Only when they are considered on the down hill side of their career or a salary cap issue are they in Carl's price range.

Seriously, I give him credit for these two corners plus Montana and Marcus Allen. Kudos to King Carl.

Marcus Allen and Joe Montana were both "old" and they played pretty well.
