KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Blue Springs man said he was the target of random violence on a drive through Kansas City, KMBC's Peggy Breit reported.

Early Sunday morning, Chris Culbertson said he and a friend were driving home after a night at the Country Club Plaza. Culbertson said he traveled east from the Plaza onto Swope Parkway and was stopped at a stoplight at Prospect Avenue when a man with an assault rifle stepped out of a car.

"As soon as I got to a full stop, I heard a couple of pops," Culbertson said.

Culbertson said the first thing he noticed was the large gun aimed right at him.

"Next thing I know, my window's shattered, my arm's numb and my ears are ringing like crazy," Culbertson said.

Breit reported that another car driving the opposite direction was riddled with bullets, but none of the four people in that car were injured.

Culbertson said he sped off down Swope Parkway and veered into a nearby shopping center parking lot.

"All I could think about was to get as far away as I could as quickly as I could, because I didn't want my buddy to be a sitting duck in the passenger seat," Culbertson said.

He said he hailed a passing police car for assistance. Culbertson was treated at a local hospital and was released, but he said he still has a long recovery ahead of him.

Bullet fragments are lodged in Culbertson's arm and back, and he said he's also dealing with the emotional trauma of what happened.

"It's just so unbelievable. It still doesn't make sense when I tell people I got shot," Culbertson said.

He said it's terrifying to realize how close he and his friend were to being killed.

"I happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and glad that it turned out as well as it did, considering the circumstances," Culbertson said.

He said he's grateful to be alive and he is trying to focus on his recovery.

The only description of the shooter is that he was wearing a black do-rag and a shirt with red in it. Anyone with information in the case can call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Glad that he's doing ok.

Personally, I would never drive through that area after dark. Pretty seedy area these days.

*edit - not to criticize your friend, obviously he did nothing to deserve it. I was just commenting on how bad things have gotten in some parts of town.

I'm going out on a limb here...

Swope and Prospect. Do-do rag. Early am. If I had to guess I'd say black.

Funny how the local news doesn't even report that anymore.

what kind of car was he driving? Was it a car jack attempt... Things are pretty bad but I've never heard of anyone getting shot at just for the hell of it. What does Chris think the guys motives were?

He wouldn't have a car worth car jacking. No idea about the motives.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Hope he is up and around soon. Sounds like one of 3 things. Initiation into a gang, mistaken identity or the guy was just completely wacked.

This PC shit continues to hit new lows.I don't think it was about being PC.

It's just that everyone pretty much knows when it comes to Prospect and Swope.

It would be like mentioning that the water was wet.

I had a freind who was driving down Truman road, heard the window shatter and suddenly realized her arm hurt.

To this day she still has the bullet lodged in her. Never found who or why or even where it came from. Just a random shot in the dark. This was probably about 7 or 8 years ago.

I don't know the different areas at all down there. I remember deciding we needed some water the last time I visited KC. It was at night and we went into a grocery store and I noticed everyone was black there and they were all looking at us like we were nuts. No big deal but it made me pay a little more attention to my surroundings after that.

That is just crap. Glad your friend is okay.

The gang initiation thing is a good guess.

Why is it that in every town I've been in that has a prospect avenue, it is always the street you want to stay off of. Kind of like MLK blvd's. Doomed to be dangerous streets.

I just got off the phone with Chris. He told me the gun used was an M16 and the bullets were made to spread out on impact. I guess they think he got lucky because when they made impact with the glass on his car they spread out before it got in his arm.

Hmm. I'm not familiar with that type of ammo. The gun itself is legal in a semi-automatic configuration. I used to live with somebody who had one.
