Got hit with something nasty today. Disabled task manager, run, gpedit.msc and regedit. I've managed to get everything working normal except one thing. I don't have gpedit.msc anymore. I have the gpedit.dll file but no gpedit.msc.

I've googled like crazy and not found any answers. Yes, I'm using xp pro. The policy editor worked before I got hit with this malware. It appears to have just wiped it off my drive.

Try running a restore point.

all programs>PC help & tools>system restore.

Select "restore my computer to an earlier time"

talks about an XP applet called SFC.EXE, which is a system file checker that runs from a command line. I believe you can reinstall gpedit.msc from the XP CD.
Hope this helps!

try safe mode, i've seen malware like that before and the only way i could kill the tasks or stop the autorun stuff w/ the registry was by booting into safe mode

This is a pretty straightforward tool. Basically, just go to Start and Run and then type "sfc /scannow". If any files are missing, it will prompt you for your XP CD and replace the missing files.

Unfortunately it didn't replace the missing gpedit.msc :banghead:
