Just wanted to share... Just got a lap band put in a week ago and I have already lost 21 pounds by this morning!

for those who don't know, this is much safer than a Gastric Bypass whereas, this is basically just a band that is surgically installed around the bottom of your esophagus at the opening to your stomach.

They can control the size of the opening to your stomach to help fatty's like me lose weight and eat much less while still having the "full" feeling.

just excited about not being a fatty for much longer and thought I would share :)

carry on

21 pounds in one week! That's good to hear.

Is that healthy? And how much did it cost? :hmmm:

How much does that thing cost? How fat do you have to be to get one?

RISKS OF LAP-BAND SURGERY

Infection - 1 in 200; treated with antibiotics

Vomiting/Nausea - possible, most patients have it once or twice only if they eat too fast.

Band slippage - 1 in 100 chance.

Death - The nationwide death rate is 3 in 10,000 or less, which makes the Lap-Band a safer procedure than routine surgeries like hernia repair or gallbladder removal.

Is it safe to lose that much weight so fast? I wonder, but I guess if the docs put it in then it must be. Good luck with it.

Another thought is, if you lose alot of weight so fast, you'll have all that loose extra skin. :Lin:

Plus, gallbladder removal only produces weight losses of three pounds or less in most patients.

The only other way to lose 21 pounds in a week would have to be to lop off one of your legs or something.

Which sucks. My gallbladder must weigh at least 5 pounds. How do you explain that discrepancy?

It takes 3500 calories to lose a lb...therefore to lose 21lbs you'd have to reduce your calorie intake by 73,500 calories.

Damn

A lot of it ends up being water retention. I don't know how it all works, but that is why the math never adds up. I don't know why your fat cells would be needing so much hydration, but I'm just saying I've heard that's where the discrepancy comes from.

The brain causes obesity.

Upregulated cells. Too many receptors.

They will find a drug soon that goes to the source.

Congrats on taking a BIG step towards a healthier life.

As far as your weight loss goes, what you've already lost is probably close to 90% water if you've only been eating less for a week. Don't mean to sound gloomy, but you haven't lost FAT yet. Or at least, not as much as you think.

It's VERY hard to lose a pound of fat. The only way to lose fat is to:

USE IT
or
HAVE IT CUT OUT

To use it: You have to expend energy. Your body fuels itself on food first, but when that's gone, it turns to fat and stored glycogen in your muscles. It takes about 3500 calories worth of energy expended to lose about 1 pound of fatty fuel. Since you're eating less, this will be easier to do. But it won't happen without exercise any quicker than a pound or so a week. If you're a big guy, you probably burn about 2800 calories a day WITHOUT exercising. If you only eat 2000 calories, then after one day, you've used up about 800 calories extra. Some of that comes from fat. Some of that comes from glycogen. But the process to replace the glycogen in your muscle takes calories away from food you eat later. So, eventually it all evens out, so just count the 800 as all fat if you want. 3500/800 = 4.4 days to lose a pound. Now, if you start exercising to the tune of another 500 calories a day, you'll be burning 1300 extra per day. 3500/1300 = 2.7 days to lose a pound. This is about as quick as anybody can really lose weight without absolutely KILLING themselves at the gym, or starving themselves. Either extreme is a fast track to falling off the wagon, and rebounding.

A vaccine is supposed to be coming out to prevent obesity.

Cutting back to less food intake than a water buffalo and exercising is also rumored to prevent obesity.

I suppose I should get the "Congrats TwoTON" jab in now before you're the next jarrod.

To update: I was up to 350lbs when I started this process.. after surgery, I didn't want to eat anything just wanted to drink water.. so for 3 days I drank water and ate sugar free Jello.

Now I'm able to eat a little more like Deli meats and eggs and stuff.. and my weight loss has slowed down now, only lost a pound yesterday.

Before this though, I ate like complete shit... I would get Triple Cheesburgers from Wendys and Soda and Fries for lunch.. then eat that again at night.. or worse :)

Wow. It sounds like the culprit was definitely an uncontrolable genetic anomally.

Good luck with the belly belt.
