they even compare Tool to Pink Floyd, a comparison that gets me many awkward looks by the naive.

Bob Dole gets strange looks when he refers to Tool as a "progressive" band.

While it's not progressive in the classic rock sense, the sonic layers and polyrhythmic percussion is (IBDHO) about the most progressive thing being released today.
