I like the hybrid picking technique, and he has some fierce sweeping chops, but it struck me that he was trying to create something that sounded sophisticated and jazzy to demonstrate the technique rather than letting the music flow... i.e. a bit contrived and forced.

It's a pretty good technique. I do a lot of improv jams..it keeps you fresh so you can still have some gas in the tank when you need it.

That's pretty much the definition of technical guitar players.
Still pretty damn impressive.
