View Full Version : 2005 NFL draft.. Did we take the right person ?

Derrick Johnson will be good but I don't know if he addressed a need.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/years/2005

Look at the first DT that was taken by Philly. Just an example of great management.

http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/sports/football/nfl/philadelphia_eagles/15193389.htm

Wouldn't we be better off with a tough little DT like that ?Or do you think DJ can make the impact a DT can make ?

Shaun Cody the 2nd rounder by Detroit doesn't look bad either.

We should allows considering reaching with our first round picks. If they are slated for pick #30 or lower we should grab them at #15.

We needed an OLBer and we got a good one.

I'm pretty happy with Johnson although based on Thursday's game I predict the following for our 2007 draft:
round 1: DT
round 2: OT
round 3: Center
round 4: DE
round 5: OG
round 6: DT
round 7: S (You know Carl can't resist at least one per draft)

DJ was the clear choice at #15.

I liked Patterson, and would like to have had a shot at him later, but knew that he wouldn't have lasted until our choice in the second round if we hadn't already traded it for Surtain.

We needed help EVERYWHERE on this defense.

DT, DE, LB, corner, safety.

Every aspect of this defense was "underperforming".

We took the BEST defensive player on the board.

How would you like to measure "impact"?

Chiefs had more wins, better scoring D, better run D. Johnson had more tackles.

Honestly, I think impact is pretty subjective, but I don't see how you can think he had any notable edge over Derrick Johnson.

Quarterback pressures. Disruptive penetrator. That's not DJ's role in the defense. Of course a DT is going to have more impact in that regard.

We didn't draft DJ to be Derrick Thomas. He's never going to be used significantly as a pass rusher. Maybe you don't realize that.

For where DJ was projected to go, and how far he fell, he was "The Guy" to take there at that spot. As it was mentioned earlier, we needed help at pretty much every defensive position, so it was a good choice. I dont think DJ will be a "game changing" guy like a Derrick Thomas, but hes going to be a good, solid LB in this league for a long time.

I'm the biggest USC homer on this board, and even I wouldn't have considered anyone but DJ with that pick last year.

I think Mike Patterson is going to be a solid tackle in the NFL, even All Pro caliber if he keeps improving. But I think DJ has the ability to be a perennial All Pro, maybe even transcendent if we get the right D-line in front of him.

DJ was the right pick, however, he did not live up to my expectations after watching his College highlight film. He still needs to develop. The thing that scares me about him is that he sometimes gambles and goes for the fantastic play instead of being conservative and making the solid play.

Thu he split 3 Giants blockers and arm tackled the RB on a screen by diving into the mix. He also did this last year (forgot v.s who.)

The bad was when he layed out against Mike Anderson at home last year on his long screen for a TD in the 1st 1/4. Live by the sword, die by the sword. With the overall talent on the D we can not offord to take these gambles. He needs to take what comes to him.

He also needs to imrpove his pass rush and coverage skills. With his speed and size we should be seeing "Special" plays.

The reason the Chiefs Defense sucks today is because the team was obsessed at finding that "special" DT and we over invested in the postions, and now we don't have shit to show for it.

2001 Eric Downing (1st Pick, Third Round)
2001 Terdell Sands (7th Rounder)
2002 Ryan Simms (1st Round 6th over all)
2002 Eddie Freeman (2nd Rounder)
2003 Montique Sharpe (7th Rounder)
2004 Jr. Siavii (1st Pick, 2nd round)

We didn't hit on any of these guys and it continues to kill us. By investing so many draft picks on one position we lack quality players elsewhere.
