Is there a way to make the white areas in the picture transparent so when I add it to another image the background image is behind it?

What he said.
Select the white area with magic wand- tolerance was set at about 50%. After all white areas were selected, I selected the inverse area, then copied the selection to a new doc, setup with transparency. Saved as a GIF with transparency on. That's it.
